  • Birth: 19 FEB 1867 in Poland
  • Death: 5 JAN 1944 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, of a stroke
  • Event: Records on file Death Certificate (Hennepin Cty); 1900 Census (Morrison Cty); 1920 Census (Morrison Cty).

  • Burial: Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Note:
Julia Lewandowski, born February 19, 1867 in Poland; died January 05, 19
44 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, of a stroke.  She was the daughter of 78. Fr
ank Lewandowski.  Conflicting records exist regarding the birthplace of Ju
lia Rhode (Roda).  In the 1900 Census, when her husband, Fred Roda, was st
ill living and listed as head of the household, Julia's place of birth w
as listed as Germany. Also, on Julia's death certificate, it stated h
er family was from Germany. However, in the 1920 Census, with Julia list
ed as the head of the household (after Fred's death), it stated that Jul
ia was born in Poland and had immigrated from Poland to the United Stat
es in 1872. The census provided that she was 51 years of age at the ti
me of the 1920 Census.  Microfiche of the 1900 and 1920 Census for Minneso
ta are available for viewing at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Pa
ul, Minnesota.  To locate information on the Roda family in the 1900 Censu
s, Minnesota, refer to Morrison County, Enumeration 104, Sheet 3, Li
ne 8.  For information on the Roda family in the 1920 Census, Minnesota, r
efer to Morrison County, Enumeration 157, Sheet 9, Line 39.

While Julia was listed as "Julia Roda" in the 1900 and 1920 Census', she w
as listed as Julia Rhode on her death certificate.  Also, father's last na
me (and her maiden name) was listed as Osowski on her death certificate; h
owever, on Julia's daughter, Mary's, death certificate, it listed Julia
's maiden name as "Wososki."  After thorough searches for the Wososki a
nd Osowski names, it was apparent that there were no persons of those surn
ames in the that area of Minnesota. According to her son, Enoch's applica
tion for Social Security, Julia's last name was Lewandowski (a common na
me in the town that she lived in northern Minnesota; whereas, the
re is no record of a Osowski or Wosiski in that same town).
Julia died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 5, 1944, at 10:00 A.M., a
fter living for many years with her granddaughter, Alyce Josephine Nicho
ls Popp Baron, and her daughter, Martha Rhode (Roda) Tracy.
She was buried on January 7, 1944, at Crystal Lake Cemetery (Section 1
    6) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Later, her daughter, Martha, and grandson-
in-law, William Joseph Popp, were buried next to her.  Her granddaughte
r, Alyce, was buried in the Crystal Lake Cemetery after her death (in Sect
ion 22 of the cemetery).  On the marriage license of George L. Nichols a
nd Mary Anna Roda, Julia's daughter, it provides that a Rev. Kitowski marr
ied the couple.  It does not state what relationship the pastor was to Geo
rge and Mary; however, the spelling is somewhat similar to the last nam
es listed on Julia's and Mary's death certificates to possibly justify fur
    ther research under that name.

Reference: ""The Foley Independent"" newspaper obituary providing that Fr
ances Lewandowski died at the age of 94 while at her son, William's, hom
    e. According to this source, she was born in Poland on January 18, 184
4, living in Alberta, Minnesota as a resident for the last 53 years of h
er life. Survivors included the following children: Joe; John; Julia Rho
da; Rose Blaszak; and William. Her funeral occurred in Morrill at St. Jos
eph's and was officiated by Rev. Shurek. Pallbearers included: Steve Lac
hinski, Julius Stellmach, Tony Bauer, Stanley Urbanski, Enoch Sabraski a
