!Thomas Waring, emigrated from England and settled at "Goldsberry," St. Anne's parish, Essex county, Virginia, in the latter part of the seventeenth century. He was vestryman, justice of the peace, and member of the house of burgesses in 1736. He died at his family seat, January 1754, leaving two sons Francis and Thomas, and three daughters Elizabeth who married Thomas Todd of King and Queen county. Mary who married Henry Robinson, of Hanover, and Anne who maried Rev. James Smith of Essex. He married Lucy Cocke, daughter of William Cocke. Virginia Biography, pg 352.
!WARING. Capt. Thos. Waring was J. P. for Essex Co 1695-1700. Major Thomas W. 1720?1740. Col. Thomas Waring of "Goldsberry,* Essex Co. was with Washington at Trenton and Princeton. He was also Burgess for Essex Co. 1736. Cap. Thomas Waring was Commis'd ensign 5th Va. Bat., Sep. 22, 1776, by John Hancock. His heirs were allowed 4,000 a. land May 17, 1839 for 3 year's services. Thomas and Elizabeth (Gouldman) Waring had five known children: 1. Col. Francis Gouldman Waring (b. July 23, 1717 - d. 1770) married Lucy Cocke, daughter of William Cocke and Elizabeth Catesby. Col. Francis Waring followed his father as a member of the House of Burgesses, 1758-1769, being the fifth generation of his family to represent Rappahannock and later Essex County In 1766 Col. Francis Waring was a signer of Richard Henry Lee's famous protest against The Stamp Act known as The Leedstown Resolutions. He led the Essex planters in support of these Resolutions. Col. Francis Waring resided at Goldberry.
