    2012feb version of REDFORD family tree ;

2012march from mariann (? mrs brian?) brownson - btb04 (at)
Fortunately I found your extensive postings on Rootsweb and hope you will solve
a mystery for me. Seeking the ancestors of Alford/Alfred? William Childers,
born abt. 1872 in KY, both parents born in KY (according to 1910 census, Marion
County, KY). No help at at all finding him in the 1880 KY census. Died in his
30's before the 1920 census. He went by the name William; Alford/Alfred comes
from family notes. He married in 1900 Malinda Elizabeth Redford, born June
1880 in KY, both parents born in KY. I have tried using the old naming
conventions as well as many other searches to try to find his
parents/grandparents to no avail. The only document remotely resembling him I
found was a 1917 KY death certificate for "Willie A Childers" who died of
chronic leukemia - no age, date of birth, undertaker, or funeral home noted!
Chronic leukemia extremely rare in 30-year-olds. Father was listed as "James H
Childers." (Have you ever wished you could go back in time and smack these
officials who weren't doing their jobs?)
Walter Everett Childers married a Mary Margaret Riney whose ancestors are
traced back to St. Marys, MD. Rineys came to KY with families led by Phillip
Mattingly. Family was Catholic. I did not find mention of any Catholic
Childers in your postings, but may have missed them. I wonder if Walter or his
    father converted?
Living children: Walter Everett, born 27Mar1906; Robert W., born 1911; Roy,
born 1916. Two other children, names unknown, died before the 1910 census.
Many Childers and Redfords in Albemarle, VA in 1700's, and I just bet their
descendants traveled the VA-NC-TN-KY-IL-MO route. 5 "Childress" in Virginia
Continental or State Line troops Revolutionary War bounty land warrants.
"Goolsby" and "Drewry" in 1790 and 1791 reconstructed KY census. I just can't
    make the connection.
    Any help appreciated.

same 2012 march response from Mariann Brownson
Warren, you are wonderful! I think you've got it. Originally, I passed over
James H. because I could not account for him in the 1870 census. He is nowhere
to be found. And the listing does have a William (with a scribbled letter that
could be an "A"). Also James H was always changing his age by 3 or 4 years
every census. Did some more searching and found Sarah's death, so here's a

    1850 Census Taylor Co KY:
    1850 Census Adair Co KY:
James, age 7, born 1843, son of Nathaniel and Martha Childers
Sarah, age 7, born 1843, dau of Alexander and Mary F. Harden
    (Born 22Sep1884 - death record)
(Born abt 1846 - death record lists age abt 30)

    1860 Census Adair Co KY:
    1860 Census Adair Co KY:
    James, age 16
    Sarah, age 17

1867: James H Childers and Sarah Elizabeth Harden marry 8 December, Adair
    County (usgenweb Adair Co KY)

1870: They fall off the map - no census info found.

1873: FYI for others seeking Adair County relatives - Big Cholera Epidemic in
    several counties

1876: Sarah Childers, dau of Alexander and Mary F Harden dies 26 June, age 30,
no cause of death given, no infant death next to her name. (KY death records)

1878: James H Childers and Nancy R. Adams marry 18 July. (KY marriage records)

    1880 Census Adair Co KY:
James H, age 33 (there he goes again with the age); wife Nancy, 22; and three
children - three by earlier marriage to Sarah Harden: Mary, age 8; William
A(?), age 7; and Chinesa, age 6. Her name makes me wonder if someone had some
Chinn family relatives. And, just two doors down from them are John Adams, 64,
    and wife Malinda, age 55.

    1900 Census Adair Co KY:
James, age 53; wife Nancy, 41; dau Mattie F, 15; son Virgil, 3.

1904: Nancy Childers, age 45, dies 9 March (KY death records)

    Plus 1910 Census Marion Co KY: James, age 66, lives with son Virgil, age 18;
and in the same dwelling are a Spurling family. So we have Adams and Spurling,
both original Catholic founder names in KY

1916: James Childers, age 71, dies 23February; birth date given 22Sep1844 (KY
    death records)

If the original Childers were Church of England/Protestant/Virginia ? then it
looks like James H did convert to Catholicism. Most of the early male Childers
names you've given me have Old Testament flavor, most likely Protestant.

Plus - Malinda E Redmond (Childers Taylor) - mother was an Adams (California
death index). Malinda married William Alfred Childers, James H's son.

A thousand thanks! You really helped straighten out the lines for me. Now I
can enjoy following their ancestors in the fabulous database you have on
Rootsweb! Once I get my Childers together, I'll send them on to you.
