This e-mail is very interestingas Lettie is my great-grandmother?s half sister and she married mygreat-grandfather
twice and divorced him twice andthen took back the name of her first husband.  I have always wondered whoher father was
but haven?t found anything toprove it other than I know she was born in Adams County, Illinois.  I haveher obituary at home
plus information on Sarah JaneBanks and her parents.  Sarah Jane Banks and John Waterman are mygreat-great grandparents.
The record from the funeral homein Walnut gives Lettie?s father?s name as J. W. Waterman, but as you havediscovered that is not
possible if you study thecensuses.  Also John Waterman  and Sarah Banks were married inBourbon County, Kansas a few years
    after Lettie was born.

If you are trying to find thisinformation for someone else, please forward my e-mail address to them. My e-mail address is
ejbuzz (at) ckt.net. I will be glad to share any information I have on the Banks and Watermanfamilies.

So, I guess we are back to several alternativesbecause Letitia was born before any of the existing marriages.  And,she always indicates she was born in Illinois.  I keep thinking Sarah JaneBanks had a relationship with some other man before she left Illinois forKansas.  I just cannot find it, nor can others that I ran across. Sarah was old enough to have a relationship.

I looked at the handwritten paper with lots of names, places, etc. In red it says John Baker married Sarah in 1856, then Letitia 1957. Well, the marriage record above shows a different marriage date. The person who created that piece of paper is a global thinker, ratherthan a linear thinker.  :)

At this time I suspect that an obituary for Letitia may be theonly way to find the answer.  However, I see only one person performinglookups in Crawford County, Kansas, and she offers to lookup cemetery records.

Does your Genealogy Society have a reciprocal lookup orinformation sharing relationship with others across the country?  If so,here is who I would ask:

I was able to view only one record.  On that record the namewas written as J. C. Waterman.  The writer clearly wrote C and not A asthose letters were distinct in his writing style.

Apparently neither I nor others located John in the 1900 census, that I can find.

I imagine that one could pursue the penitentiary record ifinterested.

2016 Dec 6 from Tom Childers
RE: Vera Mae Walker who knows a different Julia Simmons, first wife, of the 6 marriagesof John A Waterman

    Tuck,

Well, she and I are corresponding now.  I sent the samerecords to Vera Waterman as I sent to you.  She only had the one record.

After the opening round I finally presented my case for "justwho she believes are the parents of Letitia A. Waterman?

It was interesting reading her brief Waterman perspective. She actually said she was glad that Sarah Banks was there for herrelative John Waterman, but that "she (Sarah) was out of the picture about1865".  I understand what she means but I would not have said it thatway.  I did not count, but John Waterman must have had six or moremarriages.  All wives except the much younger last one was "out ofthe picture" for John Waterman.

Vera said her relative John Waterman deserted the military whenone of his wives died.  As I noted to you earlier I saw how he farmed hiskids out many times when something happened in his relationships.

John Waterman may have served time in that prison for thedesertion Vera says was charged against him.  I am less interested inthat.  As I explained in my most recent e-mail message to Vera: Who doesshe believe are the parents of Letitia A. Waterman?

It may be that Letitia A. Waterman Smith's obituarymight tell us.  The biggest problem is that the Find A Grave record onlyhas the year of her death.  If I had to find that in a year's worth ofdaily newspapers it might take me weeks to find it.  On the other handmaybe her death is indexed in a library or historical society in one of thosefour counties in the lower right corner of Kansas where she lived her finalyears.

The reason I ask is that the marriage above fits very nicely forthe birth of child Mary Emma Waterman.

However, a second Waterman child mysteriously appears below withsister Mary Emma:

I cannot find an earlier marriage for Sarah Banks in Illinois tohusband John Waterman.

If Virginia has a marriage record in Illinois for Sarah Banks andJohn Waterman, that record would explain who I have come to knowas Letitia A. Waterman.

P.S. the only clue I have at this time is the following from abiographical sketch of her husband Samuel Davenport Smith:

"In September, 1872, he married Miss Lettia A. Waterman, adaughter of John and Sarah Waterman, of Illinois, who were among the realpioneers to this county, settling near Girard in 1857."
