2015 STORY OF HOW THIS CHILDERS FAMILY CAME FROM MO TO WA STATE: by Virginia Childers Hanks 908 E Seattle Ave, Ellensburg WA 98926
Mrs. Hanks, cited above, heard directly from, but mostly about, her grandfather Walter Scott Childers born 1858 in Scotland Co MO who was aged 14 when his parents died 1872 there in Scotland Co MO, but the probate and guardianship lasted until at least 1879 when Walter became 21, and into 1880s for the younger children who were still minors then.
The estate was put into hands of sort-of-uncle Thomas Alford Williams (1835- 1885) from 1872-1885 when Mr. Williams died. (the welfare of the kids wasn't at all well- supervised by the courts) Mr. Williams just mortgaged the Childers farm and the money partly/largely went into alcoholic beverages for Mr. Williams. 1879 when Walter Scott Childers became 21 , Walter expected, as oldest son, to get the farm to run himself.
But since the farm had been so mortgaged by Mr. Williams, the McCoy family , who had maybe bought the mortgage, got the farm sold to Jasper McCoy, in process of paying off the mortgage that had robbed the kids of their farm heritage. By this time, Jasper's brother William H McCoy had married Walter's sister Sarah Childers. Walter had married himself in early 1880s, maybe before he learned that the farm would never be returned to the Childers family.
Since Walter's family heritage had been stolen from him by the negligent estate supervision, Walter and his wife and first 2 babies gave up on their native Scotland Co MO, and headed to Union County Oregon, where he had Childers and Myers kin from Scotland Co MO. Union Co Oregon people or mountainous cool weather was not what a Missouri farming family found satisfactory. Then they tried central WA State, possibly because his sister Sarah (Childers) McCoy had already moved to eastern WA from the MO/Iowa border area.
Out of the tragedy of Walter Scott Childers being cheated out of his Scotland Co MO farm by his parents estate, Walter's hard work in Lincoln Co WA brought him more farming success than he probably ever would have had back in MO, even if he had been given his parents' farm to work in 1879.
