Documentation of Virginia C Hanks 908 Seattle, Ellensburg WA 98926 in Nov 2006
Note: 9) You mentioned probate of John Finley in Cumberland Co. PA (approx.
    1760-64?)
    Note:
does that just list kids (which kids?) for guardianship or inheritance? Does it
    call the
widow Alice Finley. Any other family relationships given? Any probate book #
    and
    pages #s easy to list?
Also apparent discrepancy with your genealogy lists John and SARAH (not Alice)
Finly as parents of Mrs. Sarah Sellers.
ANSWER: "Mistake" [apparently Alice is correct and Sarah incorrect]
    Cumberland Co. PA Guardianship Docket 1 pages 107 and 109;
Docket 2 pages 122, one other document citation partly illegible.
    Letters No. 2 issued 25 July 1759
Final acct. File F (lists heirs).
1760 John Finley inventory, Alles Findley [note all spellings for "Alice"!]
Appraisement Box No. 5 [maybe in probate packet box # 5?]
17 Nov. 1763 Orphans Court 2: page 41 Alice/Allce Adams [the widow Alice had
remarried by then] guardianship of Elizabeth Findley + Sarah Finley minor
    children
    of the late John Finley
page 43 of the same: Alice Finley, Alice Adams, lists children George, Elinora,
    Jane,
    John, Elizabeth, William, Sarah
Feb. 21, 1764 - Ealise Adams, Ealee or Ealie Adams, Ealee Finley, adm. of John
    Finley, dec'd.
settlement 17 Aug. 1768--Allice Adams, also lists children George, Elinora,
    Jane,
    John, Elizabeth, William and Sarah.
    =================================================================
we suspected, & have now confirmed that the youngest 4 children mentioned in
guardianship (below) by remarried mother Alice Adams were John Finly, Elizabeth
Finley, William Finley, and Sarah Finley:
Yes, the four children are John, Elizabeth, William and Sarah.....however their
ages are not noted...just says four minor children....which is too bad...would
be nice to have their ages.
    2006 dec 3:
    Hi, Warren,
    -
Tell Mrs. Hanks that I received her letter today. I first agree that we'll
probably never get the information straight...too much time has passed.
    =
I did receive papers of Alice Finley Adams requesting that her husband, James
Adams be made guardian of her four minor children...but nothing mentions her
older children so I can't help prove George is Mrs. Hanks George....and yet I
    feel it in my bones.
    -
If she wants a copy of the guardianship papers I'll be happy to copy them and
    mail them to her.
    -
    Blessings....Joyce Wilson

Franklin Co. PA history [or perhaps Franklin Co. section in larger book?]
detailing attacks on civilians during French & Indian war of 1755-1763:
Attack on Finley party happened 19 July 1757:
Location was then in Cumberland co. PA, now in Franklin Co. PA, "about a mile
    and a
half east of the town of Upper Strasburg [about 10 miles N. of Chambersburg PA]
    Note:
where the road to West's Mill turns southward from the road joining Pleasant
    Hall
with Upper Strasburg, in the Southeastern angle thus formed is a field sloping
    gently
eastward to a swale [broad gentle gully-like depression which might run a tiny
    creek
during heavy rain]. Field owned by Joseph Stevenson, sometimes called
    Steenson.
Firearms were stacked at a distance [too great a distance] from large party of
harvesting "bee" workers, arms under care of James McCalmont Sr. age 73.
    Indians
apparently watched from a nearby mountain. "Suddenly at the right moment the
Indians, probably from an unexpected quarter, rushed howling for the guns and
    upon
the unsuspecting harvesters." Killed were "Joseph, Mitchell, James Mitchell,

Henderson, and Wiliam Gibson." "Jane McCommon(McCalmont), Mary Minor,
Janet Harper, and a son of John Finlay were carried off. Jane McCalmont soon
    made
her escape and returned to her home. Victims were buried "near the present
    farm
house. The garden fence on the side toward West's Mill passes close to the
    graves.";
