  • ID: I184
  • Name: Ann MADISON Franks
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: Abt 1665 in Essex Co,VA
  • Death: 1739 in Essex Co,VA
  • Note:
BIOGRAPHY: Ann appears by name only one time, probably not long before her
death. As the widow Ann Stodghill, she paid for two tithes on the
1739 Orange Co. VA tithe records. Their property was in the precinct
of James Pickett, they had purchased property in 1718 from a William
and Sarah Pickett. The next available tithe record for the area in
1747 no longer showed a Stodghill name. The fact she is still the
widow Stodghill in 1739, some 45 years after her marriage to John,
would indicate she only married the one time.
According to Mrs. Ward, Ann is believed to be a sister to
Ambrose, John, and Henry Madison. There is no proof of her existence
in the court and will records of the Madison family. There is some
connection, perhaps elsewhere, between the Stodghill and Madison
families. They were neighbors, and Ambrose Madison did leave a bequest
of 150 acres to their son Daniel, who is also said to have married a
Madison daughter, also unproven. A kinship relationship was not
stated in the will, it may have been a bequest for some significant
service rendered. It is a fact that two of John and Ann? Stodgell's
sons named a son Ambrose. It has previously been reported as a fact
that in 1734, Ambrose Madison left 400 acres of land to James
Stodghill, son of John and Ann. However, as researcher Bob Allen
pointed out, and I confirmed personally, a thorough reading of the
copy of that will does not show that at all, and there are no missing
or illegible portions of more than a word or two to come to any other
conclusion. It does show the 150 acres left to Daniel. Further
research on these connections needs to be done. At present, I am
comfortable that Ann is not a Madison daughter, and the family
connections may be of another nature.
John STAGELL marks a hole and nick in the right ear, a crop and a
slit and underkiel on the left ear. Daniel FRANKS marks a half spade
and underkiel on the right ear, a crop and underkiel in the left ear.
Sir, be pleased to record both these marks for me and the subscriber,
but the latter in behalf of Daniel FRANKS to whom I gave a calf of the
same mark with the female increase." (1703 Essex Co. Dd&Will Bk
    11:20).
The gift of a calf to Daniel Franks is significant, not an
everyday occurrence, and for the time, was valuable. It is my belief
that this gift was made at the time John Stogdell married this Daniel
Franks daughter, with the recording being done a few short years
later, and subsequent records show her name was Ann. John and Ann
    Stodghill named a son Daniel.
This contradicts a long-held assumption that this John's wife was
Ann Madison, the purported sister of Ambrose Madison, grandfather of
Pres. James Madison. The best research on the Madison family does not
support the existence of such a daughter. See more under Ambrose
    Madison in my database.
