  • Note:
Daniel Franklin Brown was born 11 Sep 1864 in Center Moriches, NY. He died of cancer 5 Apr 1947 at his home, next to the Eastport Church, Montauk Highway, Eastport, NY. He married at age 19-3/4. His wife Carrie Tuttle was married at age 13-1/2. Carrie's first child Walter Leonard Brown was born when she was 14y 10m old. Daniel's middle name was "Franklin" per the 1880 census, and Carrie called her husband "Frank."

In the 1880 Unites States Census he is listed as "Franklin Brown", age 15, birthplace NY, occupation Bayman. One sister, Addie L. Brown, age 17, a Teacher, was the only sibling still at home. Daniel's father is listed as "Daniel U. Brown" (should be Daniel H. Brown), age 58, a "Bay Man", and his mother as "Ann Brown", age 47, "Keeping House."

Daniel's father, Daniel Harvey Brown, was a whaler, and was gone for long periods of time. We are told that when his father returned home from an extended period at sea Daniel did not know him and cried because he was afraid of him.

Daniel F. Brown, "D.F." for short, was in the coal business in 1910, and continued to sell coal into the 1940's. His sons Herbert, Bartlett and Tom would drive the old truck to the Eastport railroad station, hand shovel the coal onto the truck and dump it in a big coal pile in the center of his "cinder road" driveway loop. When he made a sale his sons would shovel the coal into the truck, drive the truck onto the scales while he carefully weighed the load. They would then drive it to its destination and dump, or shovel, it into the customer's coal chute. (A lot of work for little reward, especially for those who did the shoveling).

From September 17, 1914 to about March 20, 1922 he was Eastport postmaster. He was also a real estate salesman or broker. He would pour over the Sunday New York Times real estate section. He had a real estate sign on his front porch. I remember only once that someone made an inquiry and D.F. talked with the person for awhile. Since he did not drive a car he probably showed very few, if any, homes.

Some of his grandchildren liked to tease him because of the way he reacted to it. Bob, son of B. T. Brown, once teased him then ran into the old woodshed. D. F. thought he had him trapped there and would "fix" him. But Bob climbed to the very top of the woodhouse and when D. F. entered he searched all around the woodshed but failed to look up, so was mystified by where his grandson had disappeared to. On another occasion Bob's brother Dick had gotten D. F. angry and he wanted to "lick" him, but couldn't catch him. Finally his mother caught him and held him so D. F. could exact his punishment. But by that time he had cooled down, and would only give the very lightest possible spanking. On another occasion the same thing happened to Bob.

    D. F. was about 5' 9" tall, had light blue eyes and talked slowly with the eastern Long Island accent of his day. ("They went out THAAR to see the DAAM." "Hold my HAAND.")
