10/25/02---Dad had a stroke on 10/14 and is currently still in the hospital. I have been visiting every day, and have used the opportunity to learn a little more about Dad's earlier days. Right after Dad's father (Charles Kretzer) was killed in a mining accident in 1935. His Mom, Jamima, moved the family to Ashland, KY. Dad would have been a bit over two. His sister, Vivian had already went to Washington DC. (Note: Nov 1, 2006---An interview with Ellen Kretzer says that Vivian did not go to DC right away. She was working at the company store in Van Lear, when the family left) Jamima had gotten a small settlement and pension from the mining company and used that to buy/rent a home. In 1951 when Dad was 18, he enlisted in the Navy. His tour lasted four years. He took his basic training, and his home port was Norfolk, VA. They had asked him which coast, East or West, he would like to be stationed on. He chose the East, to stay near home. Norfolk was about 400 miles from Ashland, and he could go home on weekends, if he had no duties. He also believed that this decision kept him out of the Korean War. He served on two different ships, the LSMR-514 (Landing Ship, Medium Rocket) and the USS Oggelthrope, an attack cargo/supply ship. His General Quarters post on one, the Oggelthrope was the forward 20mm gun. The Oggelthorpe saw him to many countries along the Mediterranean Sea. Those included, Portugal, Spain, France, Sicily, and Greece. After his tour was over in 1955, he went home. With no work around the area, Dad decided to go into the service again. This time, abt 1957, he chose the Air Force. He spent basic training in San Antonio, TX. He spent a year in Maine, and then a year in Alaska. From there it was Cheyenne. He was married (to Mom) in 1960. He spent 1966 (or there abouts) in Thailand. He helped to build an air field there. He spent about a year there. On the return trip, he stopped long enough in Hawaii to get a hamburger.
