Notes
a. Note:   Emigration 1887 - According to the ship's passenger list in the Archives of Canada, 9 year old Ernest was among large numbers of boys all headed for Suspension Bridge, Stratford and Toronto. The trunk sent with him probably contained:
1 peaked cap 2 pocket handkerchiefs
1 Suit 1 Pair of braces (suspenders) & one belt
1 pair of rubber soled shoes 1 ball of wool for sock repairs
1 pair of slippers needle, thread & boot brush
2 long night shirts 1 Bible
2 pairs of woolen socks 1 marked New Testament
1 pair overalls 1 Travelers Guide
1 set of light underwear 1 Pilgrims Progress.
 2 shirts.
His group of 8 boys (Macphersons) was sent to Stratford. The list on the Canadian Archives site spells his name "Allenitt"! Aunt Mildred says that the first family he was placed with was unkind. Ernest would have to run all the way to school because he had so many chores to do every morning. She thinks he was moved to another family who were much kinder. The Macphersons report says two letters (dated July 19 & Aug 2, 1887) from his mother asked that he be moved from the Christian Shellenberger family in Stratford, ON to the Wm F or A Purdy family in Shefford Mountain, Quebec where his brother Frank was already living. He was able to remain in touch with his 3 other brothers and 2 sisters as he was growing up in the Eastern Townships. Fred remained in England until he emigrated to Colorado in 1893, Arthur stayed in England and George also came to Canada (date unknown) and then settled in northern New York state. Annie remained in England for the most part and was a nurse. Sara emigrated to the Eastern Townships in 1894.
Mildred remembers that her dad used to tell her that he was named Ernest as a baby and added the "Raymond" when he was baptised as a grown-up.
In the 1891 census Ernest was living on a farm with an elderly couple John and Margaret Purdy in Shefford, Quebec.
