Notes
a. Note:   In the April 1901 Canadian census, Harriet was calling herself Hattie. She was a boarder living at 897 Dorchester in Montreal. The head of the household was Elizabeth Evans, age 58 and her husband was Thomas A., age 78. There was a servant, Mary Downey age 21, a cook, Ellen Carmody, age 40 and a waitress, Barbara McCallum age 68 along with 13 other boarders. Hattie was listed as a single, white female, born February 24, 1880 in England. This birthdate doesn't correspond with the 1881 census information and the Bernardo data so more research is needed. It stated that she immigrated in 1893 but we now know it was 1890. She belonged to the Church of England and was a domestic servant earning $96 a year. In 2001, Marion Allnutt (her daughter) remembered that Harriet used to say she had worked before her marriage for a family named McCarthy looking after their two children - a boy and a girl. Marion said that when her family was living in Abbotsford, her mother would send a box of apples to the McCarthys each year and in turn the McCarthys would send a box of candy to the Allnutts.
When I could not find Harriet in the list of Home Children, I asked a woman in Ottawa to look at the original documents. One listed on the website as Harriet Hayell seemed to be the correct age and, sure enough, the supposed Y is a Z.
I then sent to Bernardo's in England which holds Harriet's file from the Liverpool Sheltering Homes. They photocopied the file and sent me the copy:
Harriet Hazell, Aged 14 on Feb 24, 1889. Admitted to Liverpool Sheltering Homes Oct 7 1889.
Fatherless - said to be a troublesome girl but mother seems to be peculiar and too queer to have much to do with the training of her child. Mother is remarried and husband (Masham) was in Mexico, a labourer on Railway, but has now returned to Eng. and is still a labourer.
Mother has paid regularly for Harriet. She is a big strong girl and ought to become, with careful training, a good useful working girl. Attended St. Oswald Sch. Old Swan Stand IV and St. Oswald's Church. Christened at St. Ann's, Stanley, near Liverpool. (Sent for baptism record and it could not be found.) Was with Wm Bothwick, 5 Odsey St. 4 mths. No brothers, no sisters. Stepfather called at S. H.- seems burly, strong, decent "John Bull" kind of man. Somewhat slow and clumsy, good scholar. (Does this refer to Harriet or her step-father?)
Mother - Mrs Sarah Jane Masham, 3 Odsey St., Needham Rd. This address is crossed out and 60 Walter St., Chester is written. Then that address is crossed out and Nathaniel Masham, 175 Wavertree Rd is entered. (This document doesn't mention the date Harriet was sent to Canada - the Knowlton, QC home -but goes on as follows):
 May 19, 1890 Mrs. Philip Taber, Adamsville, P. Q. $25 1st yr. D.S. 4 mos (months?)
 Rev C. Bancroft, Sutton, P.Q.
May 25, 1891 Thomas Page, Bolton Glen, P.Q. $4 per mon.
Dec 1891 Mrs. Richard Armitage, Trenholmville $4 per mon
May 20, 1892 Mrs. Henry McGill, Bolton Glen, P.Q.
Aug 1892 Mrs. George Allsopp, West Ham
