a. Note:   Transcription details received from Scots Origins on February 3, 2003: Parish/District: Maxton. Ref: 798/2, Frame 277.
Details: Thomas Thomson (Son of John Thomson, Tenant, Maxton) and Margaret Davidson his wife who was born in Maxton Parish, had a son born in Maxton on the tenth day of May Eighteen hundred and forty-eight, baptised 3 weeks afterwards and called John.
In the 1871 census John is working as a farm servant for the Riddell family at New Coruhope in Heriot, Midlothian. The transcription of John's birthplace is incorrect. The original says Maxton, not Martin.
During World War I, John wrote very loving letters to his son Tom and family from New Belses, Ancrum. He talked of retiring from the Railway on his 70th birthday (May 10, 1918), he mentioned the fact that he had worked since he was 11 years old and that the farmer owning their cottage had rented out the land so that they might have to move.
Another letter dated in February of 1924 had the address of Rose Cottage, Lilliesleaf.
