Note: Doris remembers that her grandmother worked as a cook on a tugboat. She also remembers, as a 6 year old, going to the Refectory Restaurant at Niagara Falls where her grandmother was serving ice cream. Ellen or Nellie also worked as a housekeeper out west in Saskatchewan. She worked for the Davies family in Niagara Falls. The following article appeared in the Niagara Falls paper when Eleanor died: "Mrs. R. Smith: Mrs. Eleanor (Nellie) Smith passed away in St. Catharines General Hospital on Saturday, Feb 14. She was 90. Formerly of 358 Huron Street, this city, she had been a patient at Peacock's Rest Home, No. 8 Highway (now Queenston Road), St. Catharines, for the past 10 months. Born in England, Mrs. Smith came to Canada in 1874 and lived for several years in St. Catharines. She came to Niagara Falls to make her home 22 years ago. In religion she was Anglican. Surviving are two sons, Roy of Stamford and Spencer in St. Catharines. Five grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. Her husband, the late Robert Smith, predeceased her in 1901. Mrs. Smith is resting at the Morse and Son chapel from where funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Interment will be made in Lindy's Lane Cemetery." This death notice was in the paper: "Smith, Eleanor (Nellie) - At the St. Catharines General Hospital on Saturday, February 14, 1959, Eleanor (Nellie) Smith, in her 91st year, formerly of 358 Huron St., Niagara Falls, Ont., wife of the late Robert Smith and dear mother of Roy of Niagara Falls, Ont. and Spencer of St. Catharines. Resting at the Morse and Son Funeral Chapel, Niagara Falls, Ont., where funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 17th at 3:30 o'clock. Interment in Lundy's Lane Cemetery." This article appeared after the funeral: "Mrs. R. Smith - Funeral services for Mrs. Eleanor (Nellie) Smith, wife of the late Robert Smith, were conducted from the chapel of Morse and Son, Main street, yesterday at 3:30 p.m. Ven. Archdeacon W. H. Langhorn, rector of Christ Church, officiated and Mrs. J. W. Bowman was at the organ. Services were very largely attended by many sorrowing relatives and friends of the deceased. A profusion of lovely flowers banked the casket. Interment was made in Lundy's Lane Cemetery. The pall bearers were Lew Feren, William Feren, Ken Feren, Wilfred Feren, Earl Davies and Lorne Smith."
