Note: Helen was known as Ellen and latterly as Nellie.
Shirley Branton wrote the following:
I never heard how Grandma and Grandpa met. Grandma was born in Homer, ON which is now incorporated in St. Catharines.
When Aunt Sadie was born, Grandpa had to walk to York, (which could be Toronto) to register her. He didn’t care for the whole name that Grandma had chosen , and registered her as Sarah Elizabeth.
I don’t know what grandpa did before he became a farmer, but Grandma was a seamstress. She wanted to continue sewing for others after they were married, but he wasn’t going to have his wife working outside the house. (She did do lots of work on the farm and then raised 7 kids.)
The Smith name was definitely Schmidt to begin with, but they had it changed.
