Notes
a. Note:   Francis (2) was born at Giddy Hall 29/12/1811 of Francis (1) and Ann (Wright) Maitland, and died at sea in November 1842, according to the Maitland Tree, although this has not been substantiated (a ".... Maitland (lady) and child were listed arriving in Jamaica on the "Conservative" in November, 1842: was this his family, he having died on the voyage?).
Francis (2) spent his early life on the family pen, Giddy Hall, and was involved in the business, being referred to as joint attorney at Giddy Hall in the 1832 slave registration records (he also had problems with runaway slaves - see below!).
Francis (2) was, for at least some of his life, a seaman. His only recorded voyage was in a commercial vessel, the Westbroke, on which he was mate on a voyage between London, Jamaica (Port Royal) and return in 1836 between January and September. His son Francis, was christened (when Francis was a "master mariner") in London 12 days after his return. There are connections with Liverpool: his son Francis was shown as being born there in the 1851 census, although he later showed it as London (ie his christening place). The 1851 information is probably the most reliable, coming from his mother. Francis' will was also drawn up in Liverpool. His second son was born in Jamaica, and so the whole family must have spent at least some time there. Giddy Hall was occupied by one brother, John, and another, Andrew was next door at Mount Charles. The interests in the family property was left all the children by their mother Ann. He left all in his will to his wife, including his interests in the Jamaica properties and other belongings, including his chronometer, an essential for a mariner. A note on the Maitland Tree shows him dying at sea in November 1842. So far (5/2000) no information has been found: unfortunately, the PRO collection lacks the copies of the Kingston Morning Herald for the relevant period: papers of the time printed a lot of "shipping intelligence", which might reveal a suitable wreck. The papers also contained death notices of many local people.
There is a mysterious reference to a ...Maitland, lady and child arriving in November 1842: was this him before his death?? The MT note should not be taken as being too reliable.
He married, date & place unknown, Harriet Carpenter: his proven children were Francis (3) and John Andrew (1839).
