THE HARKRIDER FAMILIES OF TITUS COUNTY
Henry Harkrider was born on July 22, 1835, and probably near Conway, Arkansas. He was a son of George and Eliza Harkrider. Soon after the close of the Civil War, he came to Titus County and married Caroline Snodgrass, daughter of David and Elizabeth Snodgrass. The Snodgrass family lived in the southeastern part of Titus County, and were large land owners in that area. Caroline Snodgrass was born January 25, 1840. Henry and Caroline Harkrider purchased land out of the E. Griffith and other surveys in the southeastern part of the county and built a log home, which, after being used for many years, was torn down and a modern home built on the same location. This land is still owned by descendants of Henry Harkrider. Henry Harkrider died on July 21, 1907, and Caroline Harkrider died on April 5, 1916. They had five children, George Washington, b. March 4, 1869, James Henry, b. June 18, 1870, Alice, b. in 1873, Elizabeth, b. April 1,1875, and David Carrick, b. June 27, 1877. All of these children are now deceased.
George Washington Harkrider was married to Louisa (Lou) Lasater, daughter of Edna Traylor Lasater and James M. Lasater, on 15 Dec 1892. They were married in the home of Bill Allison and wife, Ann Allison. Ann Allison was an aunt of George Harkrider. His mother gave him a 98-acre tract of land off their home place, and in 1901, he bought the Allison home place where he and his wife were married, and his children still own the lands. He and his wife had four children, Eva Anna, who died when about 20 years of age, Edna, never married, Connie, who married Arthur D. Anderson, and John. Edna and Caroline live in their father and mothers old home, and John lives on the adjoining tract of land. After the death of George Washington Harkrider, his widow married Sherman Calloway. They had no children. Both she and Sherman Calloway are deceased.
James Henry Harkrider married Nancy Ellen Cook on December 2, 1894. The Dr. J. F. Wilkinson family lived north and east of the Harkrider family, on what is now State Highway 49 at the top of the hill west of Swannano Creek. The place is now owned by Morris Stevens. The Wilkinson family lived in a log house that had been built by Daniel Wall in 1844, and this house is still standing and is used by Morris Stevens as a smokehouse. Henry and Nancy Harkrider and Judge R. T. Wilkinson and Lelia Nelson, had a double wedding ceremony at the New Hope Church on Sunday, December 2, 1894. Bro. Sol Price, the Dean of East Texas Baptist Preachers, performed the ceremony. Judge Wilkinson says that he and his bride had the wedding supper the night following the wedding at Capt. Elijah Nelsons home, father of the bride, and that he and Mrs. Wilkinson spent the night there. The next day they went to his mothers home for the infare. Dr. Wilkinson had died in 1891. He says that the day was spent in feasting and dancing, and that all the family, relatives and neighbors were present, and that this infare went on for some two or three days. George Mitchell, Alec Traylor and Cancer Traylor, Negro men, were present and did the cooking and the serving, and Judge and Joe Cook took turns in furnishing fiddle music for the dancing. Judge says he doesnt think that they paid Bro. Price anything for his services, but that he did partake of the wedding supper and the infare festivities. Dr. Wilkinson and Sol Price went through the Civil War together, and Dr. Wilkinson said that during the war Sol Price would bet on anything from a card to a louse. When asked to explain about the betting on a louse, he said that during the war due to a lack of sanitation, all soldiers, more often than not, had body lice, that when two of the lice were put in a cup, they would often fight until one was killed and that a soldier, out of boredom, would get a louse off his body and bet on that louse killing one that some other soldier put up. Sol Price began preaching after the war.
Henry and Nancy Harkrider had four children, Jeffie, who married T. W. Carmichael, James Hugh, who is now a merchant in Mt. Pleasant, Ernest, who died when about 18 years of age, and Fred, who lives in Mt. Pleasant.
Alice Harkrider married Jeff Barber, and they lived in the Hickory Hill Community of Titus County. They had two children, Clyde and Leonard.
Elizabeth Harkrider (known as Lizzie) married Albert carl (Al) Miller. Elizabeth Miller was said to have been a talented person in music and art, but having and raising a large family fairly well occupied all of her time. She had eight children, Otis, Odell, Conrad, Alve, Clifford, J. V., Sibyle, and Ruth.
David Carrick Harkrider was married to Maude Miller, a sister to al Miller. He had five children, Ralph, Dovie, wife of John Douglas Coley, Frances, Luther, and Alice.
