a. Note:   e Niobrara Centennial Book. Continuing, " AmenzoT. Reid was born in Wisconsin in 1848, married Miss Achsa Bowen, native of New York in 1875. In December 1878 he came to Niobrara and operated a drayline up to 1908 when he sold to Theo Harrsch. During the early years he freighted across the plains, going to Fort Randall and other points. During later years, along with local draying he hauled water by thebarrel from the river to housewives for laundry purposes (25c a barrel).During the flood of 1881, while taking his family to a two-story building, Mrs Reid stepped off a board and fell into the icy water. A neighbor helped them to his house and gave her dry clothing. The next day they were ferried to the hills and taken to the Solomon Draper home. The farmers in the surrounding country came and offered the homeless people shelter. For three weeks Mrs Reid and children availed themselves of their hospitality, returning to their home just 23 days after the flood. Of the eight children born to Mr & Mrs Reid, two now survive - Miss Karla at homeand Florence Bell Koster, owner and manager of the Koster Hotel, the only hotel in town.
