Note: Notes for Edward Hartley , (*): Edward immigrated to America with his brother Henry in 1700. Possibly also brothers James and Anthony came at the same time. Edward and Henry Hartley purchased land together in Solebury, Bucks Co., PA. in 1702. This is where Edward died, bef. 7/14/1745. Sources: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/h/a/r/Agatha- - A-Hartley/GENE2-0014.html; World Family Tree CD Vol 7, tree # 3550 New information was sent to me by Patricia Bowman Gibbs. She enclosed a copy of Edward Hartley's will and family deeds. Also a map of Edward and sons family land. Her source was a book written by J.R. and William Hartley; HARTLEY RECORD; 1908. The authors are Fifth Generation, decendents of Edward Hartley. Edward and Henry immigrated to America prior to 1700, probably about 1682-83. Brother Anthony Hartley was a Ventner (wine merchant) who purchased land in Philadelphia in 1714, and died there in 1732, apparently without issue. His will names no children but divides his estate to his brothers, James Hartley, Henry Hartley and sister Mary and wife Mary. Edward Hartley was a resident of Solebury when a deed was made to him, May 28, 1702, for 300 acres of land there, upon which he lived until his death in 1745. They found no record of Edward as a Quaker, but his two sons Thomas and Roger made application for membership in Buckingham Meeting in 1724. The will of Edward Hartley registered in the registrar's office at Doylestown in Will Book No. 2, Page 52, is dated fourth month, June 13, 1744, and probated a year and a day later, June 14, 1715. (Under the old calendar prior to 1752, March was the first month of the year). The book provides a detailed account of all Hartley land transfers between family members. Also who the following owners of the Hartley Tract were. Edward Hartley Tract: the original Hartley tract of land was 300 acres, The title reads as follows: William Penn To Thomas Rowland, 7 mo. 13, 1681( 2500 acres), deeded to Edward Hartley, of Solebury 3 mo. 28, 1702. This will devised his estate to daughter Jennet Hughes, his son Thomas Hartley, and his son Roger's seven children as they arrive at the age of 21 years; and real estate to sons, Thomas and John Hartley. Roger Hartley (*), the second son, died September 3, 1743, in his 41st year. His wife Rebecca Packer after his death married Matthew Aspden, and had a son Matthew Aspden, Jr., who died without issue, leaving an immense estate to his half-brothers and sisters and their representatives, ..."which as been a source of considerable agitation and litigation among the Hartley's to this day (1908). (Could this be the fellow who was a shipping magnate and owned the Philadelphia waterfront? And was this the origin of the Supreme Court decision that women could own property in the new USA?) This is a list of marriages of Edward Hartley descendants from 1725 to 1818, as recorded by Buckingham and Falls meetings: 1725, Thomas Hartley, son of Edward, married Elizabeth Paxson, daughter of Henry, at Buckingham; 1757, William Hartley, son of Thomas, married Catharine Fisher, at Buckingham; 1765, Rachel Hartley, daughter of Thomas, married Ephraim Smith, at Buckingham; 1769 Benjamin Hartley, son of Thomas, married Elizabeth Simcock, at Buckingham; 1772, Mahlon Hartley, son of Thomas, married Hannah Moon, at Falls; 1779, Letitis Hartley, daughter of William, married Joseph Rice at Buckingham; 1780, Thomas Hartlley, son of William, married Elizabeth Bradfield, at Buckingham; 1781, Samuel Hartley, son of William, married Lavinia Bradfield, at Buckingham; 1784, Jonathan Hartley, son of Anthony, married Elizabeth Bunting at Falls; 1789, Mary Hartley, daughter of Anthony, maried Joseph Townsend, at Buckingham; 1795, Rebecca Hartley, daughter of Anthony, married Mahlon Doan, at Buckingham; 1803 Sidney Hartley, daughter of Anthony, married William Rice at Buckingham; 1810, Samuel Hartley, son of Benjamin Hartley, married Letitia Armitage, at Buckingham; 1818, Thomas Hartley, son of Benjamin, maried Elizabeth Paxon, daughter of Elias Paxson, at Solebury.
