Notes
a. Continued:   From THE MOUNTAIN GROVE JOURNAL, Thursday, June 12, 1924:
John Blackwood, 76 years old, died last Friday night in the neighborhood of Dawson, where he had made his home for many years. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon followed by burial at the Morning Sun cemetery. There was a large attendance at his funeral, including several from Mountain Grove, where Uncle John was an occasional visitor and had many friends.
  Card of Thanks.
We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to our many friends and neighbors for all they did for us during the illness and death of our father and husband. -- J. E. Blackwood, C. C. Blackwood, Mary L. Blackwood.
John Blackwood’s death certificate lists his place of birth as ‘Lunchford,’ Alabama, but no such place has ever existed to our knowledge. We believe this most likely refers to the ‘lost’ town of Lunsford, AL which became present-day Tessner, AL in Marion Co., along the border of Marion and Blount Co.
Noted Missouri Civil War expert, Robert Caudle, on his website, ‘CONFEDERATE VETERANS OF WRIGHT COUNTY, MISSOURI,’ indicates that John did serve with the Confederacy for a period of time, and is most likely correct:
"John Blackwood - Born, Oct. 1847 Ala. He lived in Missouri according to the 1900 Fed. Census for Wright County."
Unfortunately, the particular source for this information has been lost.
We have, however, obtained a CSA military service record for a John Blackwood who enlisted on September 6, 1862 in Jasper, Walker Co., AL, that most likely belongs to our John Blackwood. Unfortunately, due to the limited amount of identifying information contained in the record, we cannot claim it with certainty; it is also possible that it could belong to John’s uncle, or to one of his cousins, also named John Blackwood.
