Notes
a. Continued:   We've tried unsuccessfully for years to locate Josiah's parents. Our best guess to date is that he may be the son of Benjamin and Frances Collins Allen; listed in Rhea Co., TN on the 1850 Census as their son, Joseph. Both Josiah and Joseph are abbreviated 'Jos,' and it's possible that the census taker might have confused the two names. Everything else seems to match perfectly, if so. The 1860 Census states that Josiah was born in NC, where the family of Benjamin and Franky Allen were residing at that time. He then marries in Meigs Co., TN in 1852, while the family of Benjamin and Franky Allen are residing in adjacent Rhea Co. By 1858, Josiah and wife, Naomi Renfro, had moved to Cedar Co. MO. They were in Wright Co., MO for the 1860 Census.

ALLEN NAME MEANING AND HISTORY English and Scottish: from a Celtic personal name of great antiquity and obscurity. In England the personal name is now usually spelled Alan, the surname Allen; in Scotland the surname is more often Allan. Various suggestions have been put forward regarding its origin; the most plausible is that it originally meant ‘little rock’. Compare Gaelic ailín, diminutive of ail ‘rock’. The present-day frequency of the surname Allen in England and Ireland is partly accounted for by the popularity of the personal name among Breton followers of William the Conqueror, by whom it was imported first to Britain and then to Ireland. St. Alan(us) was a 5th-century bishop of Quimper, who was a cult figure in medieval Brittany. Another St. Al(l)an was a Cornish or Breton saint of the 6th century, to whom a church in Cornwall is dedicated. Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4
