Notes
a. Note:   -- Claude Hamel, grandson of Nicholas BAATZ, wrote a genealogy (completed abt.1950, rev.1953 and 1956) of the BAATZ family.
In his genealogy, Claude states: "It has not been ascertained from which
branch the American line of Baatz originated, represented by Gerard Baatz
of the Grand Duchy of Luxemberg[sic]. They settled in Haller, Commune
of Waldburg, Canton of Echternach, Grand Duchy of Luxemburg[sic], and
Nicholas Baatz came from there to America. As many records in Haller
were destroyed in W.W. II, nothing much could be obtained except data
 from surviving cousins."
"The Baatz family was royalist, very wealthy before the French
Revolution, but had to leave France during Robespierre's Reign of Terror.
Most of the French nobility fell in 1848, with the fall of the monarchy."
-- Claude Hamel was in communication with Nicholas BAATZ's niece,
Elizabeth BAATZ(1859-1926), from whom Claude apparently received the
info about the children of John/Johann BAATZ, Nicholas' brother.
-- Much of the information recorded by Claude Hamel in his BAATZ
genealogy, has been rechecked and is generally accurate, and is included
here. The additional info that I have added on the earlier generations,
was found on the L.D.S. website, but the original source unknown. There
are many discrepancies within that "L.D.S." info; much additional research
is necessary for verification of that portion; including verification
that Gerard BAATZ was a son of Theodaus.
