WILL: July 16, 1927 I, Edward Griffith of the County of Ellis of the state of Kansas, being of sound mind and memory. I do make and publish and deliver this my last will and testament to wit, that all of my just debts and my funeral expenses should be paid in full. I give, devise and bequeath all ___ rent and personal property to my wife, Harriett W. Griffith and to her heirs and assign forever. I appoint my wife Harriett W. Griffith administrator of any estate to serve without bond at her death I appoint my son Hiram W. Griffith and my daughter Lucelia Griffith Cutler administers of my estate to serve without bond. What personal property remains after my wife's death shall be divided as follows: My son Hiram W. Griffith, my son Luther E. Griffith my daughter Lucelia Griffith Cutler are each to receive one third of my personal and real estate after deducting three hundred dollars in cash witch (sic) is to be delivered to my son Hiram W. Griffith to be used as follows: to buy and place head markers at the head of each grave corresponding with both the material and finish with the monument with the cross and crown on top of my marker the letters O.E.S. on the top of my wife's head marker. The balanceof the three hundered dollars my son Hiram W. Griffith is to use to keep the Edward Griffith cemetery lot in good and clean condition. I will all of my carpenter tools to be divided between my two sons Hiram W. Griffith and Luther E. Griffith. Hiram Griffith is to have my tool chest. Roy E. Cutlers's grandson is to have my gold watch and chain, the Knight Templer emblem that is on the chain, and my G.A.R. button. The first grandson to take the Knight Templers degrees is to have my Knight Kemplers uniform. /s/ Edward Griffith. --- Obituary, Ellis Newspaper, January 2, 1930, p. 1 Edward Griffith Obituary, Edward Griffith, son of Anna and William Griffith was born in Swansea Wales, January 8th 1844. Came to the United States with his parents in August 1844 and settled for a short time in Pennsylvania then to Wisconsin where he grew to young manhood. He enlised in the 46th Wisconsin infantry in February 1964 and served in teh Civil War until its close. Was united in marriage to Harriet Cornish December 25th 1866, and they moved to Nebraska in the fall of 1972, and to Ellis Kansas in May 1887, where he passed away December 25th, 1929 at the age of 85 years 11 months and 17 days. He is survived by his widow and three children Hiram Griffith of Ellis Kansas, Luther of Big Spring, Texas, and Mrs. John Cutler of Kit Carson, Colorado, 15 grand children and 10 great grand children. Two sisters Naomi and Anna of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Knight Templer and of the Congreational church. Served three terms as mayor of this sity. ---- Ellis Newspaper, December 26, 1929, page 1 Death Claimed Edward Griffith Funeral services will be held in Ellis Sunday Although Edward Griffith had been ailing slowly the last few years his condition had not been alarming and his many friends were surprised to learn of his death Christmas morning. Mr. Griffith walked to town Tuesday to attend to some business. At 7:30 Christmas eve he took sick with acute indigestion. His condition began to be serious and a doctor was called who gave him medicine to relieve him. He lapsed into a state of coma from which he never recovered and at 10:30 Christmas morning he passed away. The funeral will not be held until Sunday in order that Mr. Griffith's son, Luther Griffith of Big Spring, Texas, and his granddaughter Mrs. Charles Rogers of Long Beach, California, may be here. His dfaughter, Mrs. Lulu Cutler and children, Ada and Roy of Kit Carson and his granddaughter Miss ALice Griffith of Kansas City, Mo, have arrived. **Note: Obit is wrong on date of marriage.
