  The spelling "Calkins" has been used for all members of the family. This is inaccurate and could be misleading. Some 25 variations of the spelling of the name have been identified. At least ten variations have frequently been encountered in census, church, land and probate records, and some individuals have had as many as six different spellings applied to them. Unfortunately, in many cases it is not clear what spelling the individual considered or when the spelling changed in a given line. Rather than spend the time to research the correct spelling for each individual, the approach to date has been to expedite work by spelling them all the same. It is suggested that anyone searching other references for these individuals consider any other reasonable spelling. Future refinements of the work will focus on spelling each individual name as he or she did, if that is possible.
