Note: State policecar around the roads of Bloomington-Normal. He grew up on the West Side of Bloomington, Illinois where his parents owned and operated a restaurant that served the large railroad yards there. He had two brothers, Don who became a train engineer on the railroad, and Kenny, who died in his 20's from diabetes, leaving a wife and two small children. After retiring from the police force, Howard owned and operated a tavern and restaurant on Front Street in Bloomington. He was married twice, both wives named Hazel. He had four children, David (1941), Linda (1943), James (1946), and Marilea (1947). He died from complications of diabetes on Dec. 24, 1981, leaving his wife Hazel Smalley Stein and their house on Kingston street in Normal. One of the happiest memories of his life was his love for baseball. He drove from Illinois to Los Angeles in 1965 to see Sandy Koufax pitch a spectacular game.
