Note: yards of Bloomington, Illinois. As a young man, he worked for the pioneers of McLean County, the Funk Brothers, near Bloomington at Funk's Grove. There he noticed a good dancer in the barn dance socializers on SAturday night, Mattie Belle Bowen, when she was 16 years old. They were married when he was 21 and she was 19. She was an extraordinary cook, and the couple wanted to live in town instead of farming, and so they began the restaurants which they continued until Mattie was 70. Not a very large or tall man, Charlie always had a twinkle in his eye and a great joke to tell. He had three sons which gave him much pride, Don, Howard, and Ken.
