Note: Clarence Eschelbach Following an illness of about two month, Clarence Eschelbach passed away at his home Sunday. He was born May 24, 1886 in Grass Lake township. Mr. Eschelbach was united in holy wedlock to Miss Amanda Gross of Chelsea, on Aug. 22, 1918. He leaves to mourn his loss, his widow, Amanda, a son, Dean; his father, Charles D.; three sisters, Ella, Edna and Laura; also a brother, Rupert, and a host of friends. Mr. Eschelbach was confirmed at an early age in the Evangelical church, Francisco. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. with interment in East cemetery. (Grass Lake, Michigan) Rev. R. E. McLean officiated at the funeral services. from a newspaper article December 1945 ESCHELBACH FARM SCENE OF DISASTROUS BARN FIRE Fire with damage estimated at $6,000, destroyed two barns, 80 x 36 and 40 x 30, a silo and tool shed on the Clarence Eschelbach farm Saturday starting at 8:30 p. m. and believed to be from spontaneous combustion. The blaze, discovered by Chas. Schoening and the Roy Waters family, burst from the roof with a roar. Mrs. Waters called the Grass Lake fire department and county pumper and with the aid of volunteers managed to save the home which was threatened at first. The loss included about 50 tons of hay, quantity of wheat, 200 bushels corn, 100 bushels oats, valuable farm implements, a horse, two calves, a bull, and 50 chickens and is partially covered by insurance. The fire could be seen for miles and it attracted hundreds of people. The family had left shortly before, Mr. Eschelbach stopping downtown and his wife and son, Dean, went to Little Wolf lake for bathing. The buildings and home were built by the late "Del" Dwelle.
