Notes
a. Note:   1930 census, Neosho Twp., Dist 12, 2nd Ward, page 146, Newton Co., MO Thurman, Albert, 45 yoa, b MO, father b TN, mother b IA (both wrong), married at 29 yoa, laborer at odd jobs, rent their house for $10 Letha O, 42 yoa, b MO, father b MO, mother b IL, married at 20 yoa Sherman, 14 yoa, b MO JARVIS W, 7 yoa, b MO family lived on College St. Is the above Jarvis a "true" name for Charles, or is Jarvis another son unknown until now, July 2002? This may explain the obituary for Albert which shows two surviving sons, Charles and J. L. I am inclined to think that the census enumerator misunderstood the name "Charles" and understood it to be "Jarvis"
Charles was born partially blind and remained so into adulthood.
Left school after the 8th grade and delivered Western Union Telegrams for about one year. He then worked at various labor jobs.
Moved to Springfield, Colorado in 1940 and obtained work at Jett Hardware Store for about two years, then various labor jobs after that. On September 11, 1942 his address was in care of the Palace Hotel in Springfield. 1944 - Springfield, Colorado - Met his future wife, Elmo, where she worked as a waitress. 1944 - Married Elmo in Oklahoma and they moved back to Cortez, Colorado. They had a daughter, Linda, who was born in May, 1947. 1948 - Charles and Elmo separated and he moved back to Baca County, Colorado. December 23, 1948 - Charles was involved in a theft of a truckload of grain along with two other men. May 9, 1949 - Charles pled guilty to the theft of the truck and $245.71 worth of grain. He was placed on probation and assessed court costs. January 6, 1950 Used name of James William Thurman as an alias when he was incarcerated in the Colorado State Pen. Booked in under name of Buster, charged with Grand Larceny, sentenced 1-2 years from Baca County. Described as 26 yoa, 5-8, 142, brown eyes, brown hair, dark complexion. Listed a friend: Leona Cornelison, 227 1/2 S. Main St., Pueblo, CO July 6, 1953 - He was discharged from parole. I have copies of his "mug shots" when he was booked into prison then when he was released 9 months later
I have no recollection of my father. My mother told me that among other reasons, she divorced him because he was a selfish man. An example was that one time when he brought home a paycheck he bought himself a pair of $40 boots at a time when my sister and I had no shoes at all.
Two dates of birth known to be used: Jan. 6, 1922 Jan. 3, 1923 State of Missouri has no record of his birth. Social Security number 494-18-2949
On October 12, 2008 I learned from JoAnn Howerton, wife of my cousin Bob, son of Uncle Chic, that while reading papers in Uncle's Chic's home related to Shurman Thurman recently they made a discovery. Uncle Chic and his wife, Lera, were recently placed in a nursing home and Bob was sorting family papers. They discovered documents related to the military service of Shurman and that he had had a metal plate placed in his skull as the result of an injury received in WWII in the Aleutian Islands. They also found information from Shurman dated from the mid 60's in which it was stated that Charles was living in the Tulsa, OK area and that he had changed his name. No one in his family has heard anything from him since that time frame.
