Notes
a. Note:   H00006
Note:   William's birth was registered without a personal name, just as "male".
Occupation in Australia: Forest guard (from marriage cert.)
  Migrated to Australia about 1906.
My father told me that he (WMB) had spent some time at Broome, working on the pearling luggers, when he first came to Australia. I have not been able to find any record of this but I live in hope.
The reason behind Bill's arrival in Australia has been confirmed by two separate and distinct sources. These being Bill's son, John Albert Brennan and his younger brother, George Brennan's daughter - Peggy Brennan. (They never knew each other, so could not have colluded with the story) He was on his way to a shooting trip in Kenmare with some friends. They had their gun's in a carriage when a small boy came up and some how his gun discharged and killed the boy. Bill was unable to stay in the town where the tragedy occurred and so migrated to Australia. I have since confirmed the accuracy of this account. A description of the events, which took place on the evening of Friday September 19, 1902, was published in The Irish Times on Saturday September 20, 1902 - page 10. The victim was a young man, Cornelius Shea, aged 22. The blast hit him in the head and he died instantly.
After marrying, the family's home was at 68 Boston Street, Moree, Telephone 126.
He saved to make a trip home to see his family, after spending thirty years in Australia. He became ill as his boat neared port at Southampton. He was taken from the ship and died in hospital in Southampton. His death certificate states that a witness at his death was his sister, Nancy. She may have seen him before he died, but he died before he could see the rest of his family, including his mother. He was buried in Southampton.
20 April 2008 I have just found a letter dated 26 May 1936 from the "Aberdeen & Commonwealth Line" sent to a Mrs M Lee of the Australian Travel Service at Australia House in London giving the details of Bill's burial. He is buried at: Hollybrook Cemetery, Grave M, Section 10, Number 14, Southampton. After contacting the administrators of Hollybrook cemetery, the correct location is: Section M10, Grave 14. It is unmarked. I have a map.
