Note: Durant�s History of Oakland Co., p. 262:
Phineas Baits, a native of Madison county, New York, and afterwards a resident of the town of Parma, Monroe county, settled on section 6, Milford township, Oakland County, Michigan, in 1834, with his wife and one daughter and his wife's father, Jesse Stowell. They arrived in the county in November, and located between them three hundred acres of government land. Five children were born in Mr. Baits' family after he settled, and three of his children are now living. His present wife has six living. Mr. Baits lived in Milford township until the spring of 1835, when he removed to his present location in Rose. He has resided forty-three years in Oakland County, and witnessed its growth from what was, when he came, almost a wilderness to its present rank in the State.
Phineas served as Justice of the Peace for Milford Twp. in 1873.
In the 1850 census, Phineas Bates is living in Milford, age 45, his wife Nancy, age 33. Children listed, all born in Michigan, are Harriet, age 15, Stephen, age 12, George, age 12, Harry, age 10, Maxon (Martin), age 8, and Josephine, age 3. Nancy Sample m. (1) ___ Myres/Myers.
In the 1860 census, Phineas Bates is living in Milford, age 55, born in NY, his wife Nancy is 45 and born in New York. There is a daughter, age 13, but her name was transcribed as Joseph. Another son, age 4, is transcribed as Madison. Lillie is also listed, age 7. There are four nonfamily members also listed. Smith Bates is not listed in either this census or the next.
In the 1870 census for Rose Twp., Phineas is 65 and Nancy is 54, both born in New York. They have a daughter, Lillie, age 16.
Phineas Bates appears in the 1880 census for Rose Twp. His age is 75, born in New York. He has his son, Smith, age 22, living with him and his wife, Nancy, age 64.
Those who are possibly buried West Highland Cem, lot 4-1.: (1) first wife of Phineas, surname Stowell, (2) Harriet Myres, (3) George Myres, (4) Madison Baits. There are no markers or record of burials for this lot.
In the Oakland Co. Vital Records under Ancestry is listed Joseph Bates, born about 1847 to Phineas and Nancy in Milford. Also listed are Lillie, born about 1853, and Madison, 1856. A marriage is listed for Phineas Bates to Nancy, widow Myers, on 6 February 1847 in Lyon Township but there is also listed a marriage in New York about 1845.
