Note: Jean Matthews 17/10/1914 - 02/02/1997 Jean Matthews was born at home in Mary Terrace Goodwood, Adelaide South Australia on 17 October 1914. Jean was a premature baby and weighed only 2 lbs. It was said that a tea cup would fit over her head. The Doctor who delivered Jean handed Jean the crown coin, that was his fee for delivering the baby, and he said "If she grips it she will live" and she did! Jean was then kept in a draw by the fire. Her father, Thomas Hedley Prout Matthews, stopped for a celebratory drink on the way to registering the birth and could not remember the name his wife had told him to register the birth and consequently he registered her name as Jean instead of Jeannie. During her teenage years Jean was known as Jeannie and later as Jean. Jean joined the Australian Army Medical Women's Service on 10 November 1941 and at the date of her discharge on 23 January 1945 she was Lance Corporal Jean Richards with 2/9 Australia General Hospital Field L of C. Jean married William Henry Richards on 28 November 1944 and raised seven sons and one daughter. Jean Richards died in Greenslopes Hospital, Brisbane on Sunday 2 February 1997 aged 82.
