Notes
a. Note:   Great grandmother Sarah Allens mother, Sarah Mead was born in Manchester, England. Sarah Meads father Henry, mother Hannah and siblings all emigrated from England, landing in New York. Henry, Jr. the oldest son drowned while swimming in New York Bay (Harbor) shortly after arrival. The family moved on, settling in St. Charles, IL, near Chicago, where Henry bought a very fine hotel, which he lost in speculation. The family then moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Henry worked at the Cincinnatti Times newspaper. Old Henry died in Indianapolis while on a business trip. Henry's death occurred on the day his daughter Sarah was married to John Allen of Philadelphia (his parents are unknown; they died early and he was raised by his maternal grandmother Mendenhall in Philadelphia) Henry Mead was with a friend and told him he did not feel well and for him to go ahead with the business. He collapsed with a heart attack. Hannah always spoke of church as "the chapel" which would indicate that their religious denomination was Methodist. Hannah moved to Lewis, Iowa with daughter Sarah and her husband John Allen, later dying there before the family moved on to California. Hannah was very short, barely reaching 4 feet tall.
John and Sarah (Mead) Allen moved to St. Jo, MO and later Lewis, Iowa. There was apparently a family breakup; with Sarah's brother, Edward Mead, who became a psychiatrist, going to Boston and grandmother Hannah going with John and Sarah (Mead) Allen to Iowa.
