Note: Hero Oomkens II, like his father, Sibet, and his grandfather, Hero Omken I, was a hero to the ordinary people of Harlingerland, stoutly defending their interests against the threats posed by the overweeing ambitions of the Cirksena family. The following verses were written about Hero Omken by Hieronymous von Grest: "Er war ein klug-verstandiger Mann, Seines Namens Ehr! wird nich untergehn! Mannheit und Starke hat er oft bewiesen, War auch von Volk und Adel gepriesen." (He was a man of intelligence and understanding, The honour of his name will never fade! He was the embodiment of manliness and strength, And was praised by people and nobility alike.) Von Grest, "Reimchronik von Harlingerland". Hero Omken had the magnificent monument to his father built in St Magnus Church, Esens, which is still to be seen there. On his own death, he too was buried in this tomb. Its inscription identifies his father, whose estates he inherited, as "Heer" or Lord of Harlingerland. Thanks to this close connection with Harlingerland, Hero II is sometimes referred to as Hero Oomkens von Harlingerland, although more frequently as Hero Oomkens von Esens, also occasionally as Hero Oomkens zu Wittmund - and other variations.
