Source: NAMES CHANGED LEGALLY IN GEORGIA, 1800-1856 One of the problems facing the genealogist is tracing persons whose names have been changed. In Georgia, alterations and changes in names and legitimizations were made by legislative act until the Act of March 6, 1856 which gave this power to the Inferior Court of the county of residence This Act established the procedure for adopting a child so as to render it capable of inheriting, the procedure to change a name and the procedure for the father of an illegitimate child to render the child legitimate. The name changes listed here give as much information as could be gleaned from the Acts of the General Assembly from 18oo to 1856. In some cases only the previous name and the new name is given. Footnote (I) has been used only if the Act states that the child was born out of wedlock, that the father was his "reputed" father, or he was recognized as illegitimate. Where two counties are given, the first is the place of residence of the person whose name is changed and the second is the place of residence of the father.
