Horse racing was one of the favourite recreations of the era, and in October 1882 Spences Bridge hosted a two day race meet. People came from throughout the interior to enjoy the spectacle. The judges were Basque Ranch pioneer Antoine Minnaberriet and William Megaw, operator of one of the first stores in Spences Bridge. The following October another meet was held. Among the notable competitors were James B. Leighton, Alex Hardie, John McKay, and J.B. Uren from Savona. In addition Mike Curnow of Spences Bridge, Archibald Irwin from Nicola, and a group from Kamloops were present. ------------------------------------- A memorial newspaper clipping states that J. B. Uran (sic) had sisters, Mrs. Wade of Kamloops, Mrs. J B Leighton of Savona, and Mrs. Jas. Knight of Lytton. The latter would have been his step-sister, Minnie who married James McKnight after the death of her first husband, George Baillie.
