Note: Re Rebecca's birthyear, birthplace, and her date of death: Rebecca's birthyear was 1800 according to her tombstone, and Morton's HISTORY OF PRESTON COUNTY, V. 1, P. 415, which indicated that Adam Bishop married Rebecca C. Riley, born 1800, died 1865. LDS microfilm 170879, p. 291, Reference #9576 gives her birthdate as 1800, her birthplace as Preston Co, WV, and her date of death as 186_. I don't believe that Rebecca was born in Preston County. In one of the obituaries of one of her sons, The Honorable Charles Mortimer Bishop, in The Preston County Journal, 6 Sep 1902, his mother was said to have been born in Winchester [Frederick Co],VA. Re Rebecca's maiden name: In S. T. Wiley's biographical sketch of the Honorable Charles Mortimer Bishop, a son of Adam and Rebecca, on pp. 252 and 255 of his HISTORY OF PRESTON COUNTY (West Virginia), published when Charles was still alive, Wiley wrote on p. 252 "His father's name was Adam and his mother's maiden name was Rebecca C. Riley." Re Rebecca's middle name: That Rebecca's middle name was Carr was found on Marie Hanway's handprinted genealogical chart on Adam Bishop's family and descendants which John Pierson found among various family genealogical records stored at the Taylor County Library in Grafton, WV. (These records were apparently compiled by a Marie Hanway, probably related to Rachel Hanway, the wife of Carr McCurdy Bishop, a son of Adam and Rebecca, and were shared with Lewis Weaver Pifer, a descendant of Carr and Rachel. In fact, Mr. Pifer is believed to have drawn up the charts, upon which was noted that this was Marie Hanway's data.) Re Rebecca's parents: That Rebecca C. Riley was the daughter of James Collins and Miss MCellan, both of Preston County, VA is found in LDS's IGI records, Film # 170879, P. 291, Reference # 9576. I believe instead that James Collins became Rebecca's stepfather only when Miss MCellan married him, Reference #9574. Rebecca is not named in James Collins's will. That James Collins married Miss MCellan is recorded in LDS's Film 184305, P. 1251, Reference # 28610. Re Rebecca's marriage: Rebecca was 15 or 16 when she married Adam Bishop according to her recorded birthdate. That she married him 29 April 1815 in Allegany, Maryland is in LDS's IGI records, Batch # 533721. Re Rebecca's children: Adam & Rebecca had one daughter and seven sons, all born in Hardy County, VA: Ferdinand, b 1817; James R., b 1818; Charles Mortimer, b 1827; Anne Rebecca, b abt 1830; Adam/ Addison Henry, b 1831; William Harry, b 1834; Carr McCurdy/McCarty, b 1836; and Jacques A. Bishop, b abt 1839. More re Rebecca's date of death: John Pierson read Rebecca's broken tombstone lying next to that of her husband and determined that her date of death was 5 or 15 May 1865. Janice Cale Sisler did not have Rebecca's tombstone reading in her TOMBSTONE READINGS OF PRESTON COUNTY, V. 1 & 2, but included it in a note at the back of her V. 3, after I wrote her about it. Her note says the information should be added on p. 65 of V. 1, however it does not indicate that the tombstone lies next to Adam's. Re Rebecca's death record or will: The WV Division of Culture and History was unable to find Rebecca's death record or will. Re a possible sister of Rebecca's: Hardy Co VA's Marriage Book 1, p. 50 has a Mary Riley marrying a Mr. Hooverman in 1813 . It is unknown if Mary was related to Rebecca.
