  12 June 1900 U.S., Indiana, St. Joseph Co, Portage Twp, South Bend Census, P.21B: Joseph Horvat, a day laborer, is 33, was born in Feb 1867 in Hungary as were both his parents, has been married less than a year, has no children, immigrated to the U.S in 1897, has been in the U.S. 3 years, his naturalization application was pending., is a day laborer, can read and write but cannot speak English, and is renting a house.
  20 April 1910 U.S., Indiana, St. Joseph Co, Portage Twp, South Bend Census, P. 7B: Joseph Howath is 42, is in his first marriage, born in Hungary [written above is "Magyar," a possible abbreviation for Magyaravar,] , as were both his parents, is a factory glocksmith, has not been out of work, cannot read or write, speaks Hungarian, immigrated in 1897, owns the home with a mortgage , The following individuals were also living in the household: Emery Burkalia, 21 (Joseph's uncle); Vincent Nemith, 22 (Joseph's cousin); Charles Owan 23, a roomer; Edward Socs 20, a roomer; all factory laborers from Hungary.
  8 April 1919: Date Joseph and Theresa divorced according to Joseph's application for a license to marry Mary Matus. St. Joseph County, Indiana, including its archives, has no record of the divorce. It is possible the divorce was obtained elsewhere, but unlikely. The date given may actually be the date they separated.
  1920 Census: I have been unable to find Joseph for certain in this census,; presumably he is boarding somewhere.
  27 Nov 1920: Joseph Horvath married Mary Matus on the same day that he applied to marry her, swearing and signing that his birthdate was 3 Feb 1868, that he lives at 622 S. Harris St, South Bend, is a plowfitter, that his father's name was Steve Horvath, who was born in Hungary and is deceased, that his mother's name was Rozalia Nemeth who was born in Hungary and is deceased, that he has not been "an inmate of any county asylum or home for indigent persos within the last five years", that he has been married once before, that they divorced 8 April 1919, that he does not suffer any "contagious or transmissable disease, that he is not an imbecile, feeble-minded, idiotic or insane, or is he under guardianship as a person of unsound mind," All of this is recorded in the St. Joseph County, South Bend, Indiana Book of Marriages, V. 31, P. 598.
  18 Jan 1926: Mary and Joseph were married less than six years before he was killed on a rainy day by a train when he was walking to work along some railroad tracks. certificate issued by theSt. Joseph Co Health Dept, South Bend, Indiana, indicates that he died Jan 18,1926 at 7 AM at 622 South Harris Street (his home), that he was 53, white, and married. The primary cause of death was entered at the inquest: "Fracture Skull Struck by R.R. Train - Accidental." The date, Jan 20, 1926, and place of burial, South Bend, IN, was arranged by the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home of South Bend. The certificate of death was filed Jan 19, 1926, in Book No. 39, P. 276. Mrs. Mary Horvath, the informant, added that Joseph was born 12 Feb 1872 in Hungary, that his father was Joseph Horvath, b in Hungary, that his mother, name not given, was born in Hungary, and that Joseph worked at the Studebaker [auto plant]."
  Note: The St. Joseph County Health Department in the County-City Bldg, 8th Floor, South Bend, Indiana 46601-1870, on July 11, 1993, had no record of Joseph and Mary ever having had any children born to them in their county.
