  4 Sep 1850 PA, Wayne Co, Texas Twp Census, P. 211, Ancestry Census Image 9: Enumerated on this page are: A Philip Coyne, age 45?, born in Ireland, a carpenter. He had $2500 in real estate. A 10 year old boy, William Coyne, born in PA, is living with him, whom I believe was a grandson. A Wm Coyne, age 28, a laborer, lived with his family next door with a wife Bridget, 25, and four children, Mary, 11, born in Ireland, Ellen, 9, born in Ireland, Philip, 7, and Catherine, 3, the latter two being
 born in PA. The relationship of these Coynes, if any, to our Coynes, is unknown.
  9 Sep 1850 PA, Wayne Co, Texas Twp Census, P. 220, Ancestry Census Image 26: Enumerated at the bottom of the page are a Philip Coin, 53, a laborer, his wife, Margaret, 52, and their children Thomas Murray, 22, a laborer, Jane, 13, Elisabeth, 11,
 Philip, 9, and a boarder, Henry Harker, 22, a laborer from Germany. The Coins were all born in Ireland. Their relationship to our Philip, if any, is unknown.
  1860: Our Philip, wife, Sarah, and daughter Anna are not listed in the 1860 WV Census Index Book
  13 April 1863: A Philip Coyne, a labourer, age 33, of Ireland, Manifest ID #901891, arrived in New York from Liverpool, England originating in Ireland, on the Ship John Bright in steerage. He planned to stay in the USA, but was not a U.S. citizen yet. It is unknown if this Philip Coyne is related to ours. This info came from Family Tree Maker's CD 357 "Irish to America, 1846-1865."
  On a copy of the original manifest of the NY Passenger Lists, 1851-1891 were found Philip Coyne, 33, his wife Mary Coyne, 38, and their children as Brid[get], female, 10; Mary D., 8; Michael D., 5; John F., 3; and Pat D., 1; with Mary Coyne, 20, servant; and Brid[get] Coyne [?], 12, accompanying them.
  9 May 1863: A Philip Coyne, a shoemaker, age 48, of Ireland, Manifest ID #901909, arrived in New York from Liverpool on the Ship Monarch of the Sea in steerage. He planned to stay in the USA, but was not a U.S. citizen yet. It is unknown if this
 Philip Coyne is related to ours. This info came from Family Tree Maker's CD 357 "Irish to America, 1846-1865."
  16 Aug 1865: According to NY Passenger Lists, 1851-1891, a Philip Coyne, 22, b Ireland, arrived in NY this date on the ship American Union from Liverpool, England, line 34, Microfilm Roll 255, List # 776.

 1870: Our Philip, wife Sarah, and daughter Anna are not listed in the 1870 WV Census Index Book.
  1870: A Philip and Sarah Coynal were allegedly enumerated in the 1870 East PA Census Index. It is unknown if this was our Philip and Sarah. I have been unable to find this couple among Ancestry's census images.
  21 Apr 1870: Philip made an oath before the Preston Co, VA Circuit Court Bona
  [1] "that it was Bona Fide his intention to become a citizen of the UNITED STATES, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty, whatever, and particularly to Victoria, Queen of Great
 Britain;"
  [2] "also proved to the satisfaction of the Court that he has resided within the UNITED STATES for the continued term of five years next preceeding this application, without having been, at any time during the said five years, out of the territory of
 the UNITED STATES;"
  [3] "also that he has resided one year at least within this State;"
  [4] "and it further appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that during that time he has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the UNITED STATES, and well disposed to the good order and happiness
 of the same." [Continued 20 Aug 1872. See below.]
  6 Aug 1870 PA, Wayne Co, Texas Twp, Honesdale P.O. Census, P. 381, Ancestry Census Image 79: Enumerated are a Philip Coyne, 73, a retired laborer, wife Margaret, 71, who could not write, and son Philip, 27, a carpenter. This appears to be the same
 family as the one described above on 9 Sep 1850. Philip and his son Philip are U.S. citizens. It is unknown whether this family was related to our Philip.
  16 Aug 1870 PA, Wayne Co, Dyberry Twp, Bethany P.O., District 329 Census, Pp. 133 A & 133B, Ancestry Images 24 & 25: Enumerated were a Phillip Coyne, 65, a farmer with $6000 in real estate and $1546 in personal property, who appears to have married twice, as there are older children, James, 18, Andrew, 13, and Phebe, 15, and younger children, Francis M., 4, and Hanora? M., 2, probably born to Philip's second wife, Marcelli, 30. Philip and Marcelli were born in Ireland but all the children were born in PA. It is unknown whether this family was related to our Philip.
  24 Aug 1870 PA, Wayne Co, Honesdale, Honesdale P.O. Census, P. 422, Ancestry Census Image 11: Enumerated at the bottom of the page are a Thomas Coyne, 55, born in Ireland, who has a hotel, $20,000 in real estate, $10,000 in personal
 property, and his daughters, Julia, 17, and Kati, 15, both born in PA. Whether Thomas was related to our Philip is unknown.
  25 Sep 1870 PA, Wayne Co, Honesdale Borough, Honesdale P.O. Census, P. 422 [aka P. 49], Ancestry Census Image 1: Enumerated at the top of the page are the rest of Thomas's children: Fannie, 12, Louisa, 11, Emma, 9, and Michael, 29, who is a clerk at
 the hotel, all born in PA.
  3 Jan 1871 Preston Co, WV Deed Bk 33, pp. 308-310 re Salmon and Margaret Messenger, formerly of Preston Co, WV, and now of Liokuk Co, Iowa, deeded to James Messenger of Preston Co, WV three parcels of land in Portland Twp on Spruce Run, in exchange
 for $6000.00 plus interest that he had paid them as agreed in 6 installments.
  5 Jan 1871 Preston Co, WV Deed Bk 33, pp. 348-349:
 "This Deed made this 5th day of Jany 1871 Between James Mesenger and Lidia his wife grantors of the first part, and Philip Coyn grantee of the second part. all of Portland Township Preston County W Va Witnesseth that for the consideration of two hundred and forty five dollars to be paid as follows Ninety dollars in hand. at the signing of this deed, the receipt thereof is hereby acknowledged and Seventy seven 50/100 dollars in one year from Nov 15 1870 without interest, and Seventy seven 50/100 dollars in two years from Nov 15 1870 with intrest from date of Note for which the said Philip Coyn has executed his two separate notes, and for the full performance and payment of these notes the said Messenger grantor retains a lien on the land herein conveyed to the said Philip Coyne grantee, viz Commencing on the North side of B & O R.R. in Michael Murphy line and runing along said Murphy line to the County Road on the ..ey Ridge leading to Rodemer Tunnel 49 Rods thence along the said Road 49 3/4 Rods thence along the Medow fence to the R. R. 46 Rods thence along the line of B. & O. R. R/ 59 rods to the beginning. containing about 15 acres or whatever may be within the above described ines. said land being part of the farm known as the Salmon Messeger's and conveyed by said S. Mesenger to grantor by deed bearing date of Jany 1871 and the said grantors covenant that they have a right to convey the said land with all of its privileges and appurtenances thereto belonging whatsover.
 Witness the following signatures & seals. James Mesenger Lydia Mesenger" This document was followed by the common one whereby Lydia had sworn that she had willingly executed it and did not wish to retract it.

  20 Aug 1872: [Naturalization document continued from 21 April 1870 above) "And he here declaring an oath that he will support the Constitution of the UNITED STATES, and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and
 fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State, or Sovereignty, whatever, and particularly to the Queen aforesaid, the said Philip Coyna, is therefore admitted a citizen of the UNITED STATES and is hereby declared such accordingly."
  Signed by Smith Crane, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Preston Co, West Virginia, and by John A. Dille, sole Judge of the same Circuit Court, 20 Aug 1872."

  1875: In the 1900 WV Preston Co Census, Nora Anna, said she came to America 25 years earlier. She would have been age thirteen at the time.
  1880: The book 1880 CENSUS OF WEST VIRGINIA, Compiled Alphabetically By Counties, Vol. 6, Monongalia, Preston, Marion [Counties], Compiled by Wm A. Marsh, published by the Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, MD in 1984, lists on p. 303, Philip Coyne, white male, 49, Repair Hand, born in Ireland to parents both born in Ireland; wife Sarah Coyne, white female, 58, Keeping House, born in Ireland to parents both born in Ireland; and daughter Anna, white female, 18, born in Ireland to parents both born in Ireland. Note: Their names are the only Coynes listed in the 1880 WV Census.
  24 June 1880 WV, Preston County, Portland District, page 278D:
 Philip Coynere, 49, repare hand, cannot read or write, b in Ireland to parents both b Ireland.
 Sarah, 59, wife, keeping house, cannot read or write, b Ireland to parents both b Ireland.
 Anna, 18, daughter, single, b Ireland to parents both b Ireland.
  Note: Living next door are a Patrick and Nora Burke, both 40, born in Ireland. He also is a "repare hand." They have 8 children, James F., Nancy Ellen, John, Sarah, Bridget, Nora, Patrick, Anna and Catherine, ranging in age from 14 down to 1.
  On the same page are a Patrick, 62, and Margaret Odonnel, 41, both b Ireland, with 5 children, all b in WV: John, 23; Bridget, 21, Sarah, 15; Maggie, 12, and an adopted son Peter M., whose natural parents were also b Ireland. Margaret was listed in the Bishop Family Bible, following our Coynes, as "Margret, the wife of Patgrick O'Donnel died Mar 4 1881."
  22 Feb 1883: Date of Philip's death according to Bishop Bible in possession of my sister-in-law. The WV Division of Culture and History, 1900 Kanawha Blvd, East, Charleston, WV 25305-0300, Telephone 304-558-0220, Fax 304-558-2779, was unable to locate Philip's death record or will, nor has Preston County, WV.
  Note: Mary (Bishop) Carl, my mother-in-law and Philip's granddaughter, dictated for my notes that Philip was from County Mayo, Ireland.
