Notes
a. Note:   If Wm. Bown Sr. was born in 1727 he would have been 94 yrs. of age
If Wm. Bown Sr. was born in 1747 he would have been 74 yrs. of age
"William Bown came from England to Sydney, Cape Breton, after the Island was taken from the French in the battle of Louisburg. He was married and had two children born in Sydney - William Jr. and George." (Maria Susanna (Bown) Boutilier, Family Bible). William Bown Sr. is noted as having been a United Empire Loyalist in Elva Jackson's "North Sydney" book. This might contradict Maria S. (Bown) Boutilier's story of his immigration, since he would have had to have spent some amount of time in the colonies. (KAP)
FAMILY LEGEND: William Bown Sr. is said to arrive at Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton, on 28 October 1774. It is said that William and two brothers received a Land Grant from the King of England for land in New York. When the Revolutionary War started William remained a loyal citizen of England and left for Cape Breton. One of the brothers became a patriot and remained in the colonies, the other brother returned to England. It has also been said that a cousin had the original Land Grant, but we have no record of who this Person is or, if the Land Grant actually exists. (ECJ)
A letter written from C. Roy Bown to Emily McConnell dated 8/1/1971 states "Wm. Bown Sr., I understand, arrived at Little Bras d'Or on the 28th October 1784, and moved to Sydney in 1785 at the time Sydney was founded. Apparently his son, William Jr., moved to Sydney with him and George stayed in the Little Bras d'Or, Sydney Mines area." (This paragraph seems to make the landing at Little Bras d'Or in 1774 by Wiliam Sr. incorrect.
Information was received from Kent Peterson,Cudahy Wisconsin. Elva Jackson's book "North Sydney, Nova Scotia: Windows on the Past". Belleville, Ontario: Mika Publishing Co. 1982. Information that has been handed down through the generations. Entered here by Betty Jacques, Leicester Massachusetts. The date of arrival in Little Bras d'Or was documented by C. Roy Bown.
Came to Sydney from England after Ireland(?) was taken by the French in the Battle of Louisburg. A note written by Mark Slade.
Agnes (Bown) Hodgins (A-391-B), in a letter dated 1st May, 1980, wrote: "The Rector of St. George Anglican Church told me he had been under the floor of the Chancel. It appears that when excavating under the Chancel floor a couple of years ago the workmen found three tombstones. All they could make out was the word "Esquire" on one of them. He said he was curios to find out who Mr. Esquire was so he and a couple of others crawled under and they found the name Bown before the Esquire. I told him it was probably my great-great grandfather."
I did not follow up on the above information at the time. I recently prepared the sketch below, together with the data collected while preparing the Cape Breton Bown family chart.

Wm. Richard Bown - 14th Sept., 1840. St. George Anglican Church Records - Baptisms: page 101, 15th Feb., 1801, Wm. Richard Bown.
Slab over vault outside north wall of Chancel reads:
  Memory
 Wm. Rigby Bown
 who died Sept. 14, 1840
 Age 40 years
St. George Anglican Church Record of Burials: 16th Sept., 1793, buried Mrs. Bown, age about 63 years, the wife of Mr. Wm. Bown, Sr.
Also from Record of Burials, page 8, No. 56, Wm Bown, 1821.
It is, therfore, quite probable that Wm. Bown Sr., and his wife are also buried on the floor of the Chancel.
(Sketch of plot is under scrapbook)
