MEMBERSHIP ROLES OF MT. NEBO BAPTIST CHURCH WILKINSON COUNTY, GA Taken from the Church Minutes 1808 - 1855 Joab Durham - By Experience 27th August 1814. Dismist 25th Dec. 1819. -------------------------------------------- Source unknown: Joab Durham went with his brother John to North Carolina and to Georgia. He married Jenny Prescott of Irish descent. Following is a list of sons; no record of the daughters is available: Thomas Jeptha, borm 1794; John, born 1796; James Mathew, born?; Joab II, born 1814. There were seven sons, but these are the only names available. New information speculates daughters Margaret (~1788), Catherine (~1790) and maybe a Jane (~1798)
Joab went to NC with brother John, but John did not go to GA. He was a fife player in the RevWar, spent most of it off SC as a prisoner of war in a British ship. He moved with his son John's family to the area now known as New Holland, OH by 1816. His grandson Rafe (Ralph) chronicles the family in the "Pioneers for Fayette & Pickaway Co. Ohio" reprinted in about 1898. New Holland is on the county line; they were in Marion Township. John senior died in 1821; his son in 1853. (his will is suppossed to be in the Washington Court House, Fayette Co. but is missing (probably stolen) ------------------------------------------------ Seeking parents of SETH DURHAM; BORN 1799/1800 in SC; indicates in census both his parents were born in SC. Lived in Bulloch, Houston, Irwin, Ware & Coffee Counties, GA; married Serena Holloway @1820 died 1882. References in various data from these areas of Georgia indicate Seth, Ruth and Jeptha Durham were the children of JACOB L. DURHAM, R.S.
I have a copy of a letter dated 1957 from the Department of State, Surveyor- General Dept., Atlanta, GA stating Abraham Durham and Jacob Durham, both Revolutionary soldiers, received grants for Land Lots drawn in the 1827 Land Lottery. 1827 Lottery info shows Abraham R.S. resident of Clark Co.; McCrees Militia drew Lot 40 Dist. 12, Carroll Cty. - Jacob R.S., resident Irwin Co, McCalls Militia drew Lot 73, Dist 31 Muscogee Cty. Abraham also drew land in Early Cty in the 1820 lottery and Joab, resident of Irwin Co, Statehams militia drew lot 21, section 2 in Houston in the 1821 lottery.
(Note: DAR records of Rev. Patriots: Abraham Durham RS; born before 1755 in Virginia; died before March 6, 1826 Georgia; wife - Sarah ??. Can find no records of Jacob L.)
No census data on Jacob but indexes to Irwin County deeds do indicate a Jacob L. Durham. However, copies of the actual deeds are in the name of JOAB L. DURHAM. Are Jacob and Joab the same?? Any information on Jacob L. or Joab L. Durham would be greatly appreciated.

Good Morning, Shelly. Yes, and I will be happy to share. If you think we are on the same line, plz send to me your snail mail address.
John W. Durham, b. 1796, s.o. Joab Durham and Jennie (Prescott) Durham. John was child number three of seven. Older siblings, Thomas Durham, 1792, Jeptha Durham, 1794. Then John Durham, who married Polly Yearty. Younger siblings, James Durham, 1800, Matthew Durham, 1804, Nathanael Durham, 1806 (married Annie Davis), and my Joab Durham (Jr), 1814, (married Bethine Hunter on 3 Mar 1831).
John and Polly (Yearty) Durham had three children. Polly died and John Durham married a second time to Mathilda Mason, a widow woman with two children (girls). From this marriage came three more children.
The children of John Durham were: James Lucius Durham, 27 Dec 1814 GA Cathering "Kate" Independence Durham, 4 Jul 1816 GA Nellie Durham, 1820 GA Second marriage: John Thomas Lindsey Durham, 1835 GA Sarah J. Mathilda Durham, 23 Oct 1837 GA Pollyann Frances Durham, 28 Oct 1840 GA
James Lucius Durham, 27 Dec 1814 GA, married in 1838, Elizabeth (Eliza) Crawford Davis, who was born 17 Sep 1824 GA. They had THIRTEEN children. Eliza died on 14 Aug 1864 in Louisiana. Old James Lucius Durham married again, this time to Mrs. Elizabeth Hilburn Brock. This marriage produced FIVE children. Add them up an you get EIGHTEEN children. Winn Parish, Louisiana is covered with Durhams. Many of them preachers and doctors. and educators. and farmers.
There is a book about this family. My Greatest Hero, a biography of James Lucius Durham, by one of his sons. My line is through the youngest brother of John W. Durham, Joab Durham (Jr)., 1814. Kate Durham, 1816 GA, married a couple of times --- AOL is trying to kick me off- line. Better send this before I lose it. Wilkie -------------------------------------------------- According to KY Rev War Pension records, there was a James Durham in Lincoln Co who served in Va unit and was born 1745. Could be a brother to John, who was b. 1742,? Can't tell you who John's father was, but can probably tell you who it wasn't! Thomas & Peggy Lindsay Durham had probably 9 sons; 2 died at Valley Forge. Of the 7 who survived, Joab & John went to NC. Joab then to GA, John (d.1821) to Ohio with his son John(d.1853).Settled in New Holland (border Pickaway & Fayette Co., OH) I have much info on these 3. John and John, jr are often fused into 1 . The remaining 5 went to TN/KY. Names would be William, James (born 1747), Joel, Nathaniel, and Thomas Jr.(believed to be a primative Baptist preacher) The 2 believed to have died were Jeptha & Matthew. would appreciate more on these, as that's about all I have on them. Jim Amaral Columbus, OH
Thomas Durham m. Peggy Lindsey: Children known: Thomas Durham William Durham James Durham Joel Durham Nathanael Durham John Durham Joab Durham m. Jennie Prescott in NC & MOVED to GA. two more sons, names unknown.
