Enlisted as a Private on 05 June 1861 at the age of 28 with Company I, 21st Infantry Regiment - North Carolina. Hospitalized on 03 July 1862 at Richmond, Virginia with gunshot wound to the left hand. Promoted to FULL SERGEANT on 15 January 1863, but "reduced to ranks" to FULL PRIVATE on 1 May 1863. Wounded on 03 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA. Listed as POW on 25 March 1865 at Fort Stedman, VA. Confined on 27 March 1865 at Point Lookout, MD (Estimated day). Oath Allegiance and released on 26 June 1865 at Point Lookout, MD.
