Analysis: Minerva was born to parents who were out of wedlock. The only evidence that William C. Read was Minerva Read's father was his acknowledgement on her baptism records. Putney was a frontier town in the late eighteenth century and the church was frequently without a minister. All of William C. Read's children were baptized in 1817 when the town underwent a powerful church revival.
