Note:   Louis came to the United States about 1915. He left his homeland of Russia when he was conscripted into the Russian Army. His brothers had been conscripted earlier, and we never heard from after the left the home. Louis married Sarah (Chaim Shlema) and settled down in the shtetl. It was only after Sarah's saw her girlfriends being raped during a pogrom and the possibility of Louis going into the army, that the young couple decided to leave Russia. Sarah's brother and mother, Gertrude decided to go with them. Sarah's father David, chose to stay behind. During the travel, Louis carried Sarah on his back because she was so ill. When they reached the border, the border guards refused to allow them to cross unless they gave the guards all their possessions and valuables. The family arrived in Glasgow, Scotland where their first daughter, Celia was born. Due to a language barrier, Celia was registered as "Jesse Brown". From Scotland they travelled to London. Sarah's brother stayed there. Louis continued to America and sent for Sarah as soon as possible. The ship that Sarah and baby Celia travelled on, began to sink after leaving the Canadian port. They had to switch ships. Gertrude followed them to America as soon as she could. David was never heard of again.
