Notes
a. Note:   N26 Jacob Devalska/Devielski/Develski resided in Ashland, WI with first wife Anna Soder from whom my mother’s family is descended. He had children by a second wife, Sophie Colbo, who he married in 1903, after first wife Anna died in 1901. As of 1903 he listed his occupation as saloon keeper. - My mother Virginia and my aunt Minerva visited them in the late 1920's and they had a young baby at that time. - Jacob's grandaughter Evangelina Basquette says her mother Mary DeValska Turcotte accepted her father's new wife. She told me some of the family lived in the area of Mellen, Wisc. on Hwy 13.
Walter Develski (Jacob's Grandson through second wife Sophie) was about 4 years old when Jacob died and recalls that Jacob's casket was brought home. He says Jacob died of prostate cancer and his impressions from his father and other family is that Jacob was a mean and "crabby" guy, a hardass who worked his kids very hard and most of the family left home early. Also, as for his business, he says Jacob ran two "blind pigs" - he had a tavern/whorehouse in Stetsonville, WI and one in Medford, WI. He was a pretty wealthy guy which was evidenced by the fact he had a carriage and a driver. Jacob had a brother-in-law who was a bookkeeper for Jacob and is said to have stolen money and ran off with it.
Jacob came to the U.S. in 1869 and first settled in St. Joseph, MO where he had a brother (name unknown). He then moved to Duluth, MN and later Rib Lake, WI (where Walter, Sr. was born) and then later moved to Mellen, WI. He worked at a tannery in Mellen and had 2 houses there, which are now gone. It is believed he was made a US citizen in Duluth, MN. - He kept a family bible with family info which is believed to still be in the Develski family, possibly with the Karrow family.
Jacob's death certificate stated he was 86 years 4 months and 28 days old at the time of his death in 1937. By my calculations, and if that info was true, his birthdate would have been approx. July 26, 1851. __________
