Notes
a. Note:   N404 John was a farmer, but by 1900 (age 44) he was an inmate at Willard State Hospital, where he appears to have died. He is buried at Hayts Cemetery in Ithaca (where his parents are also buried).
  1880 Federal Census:
John C. Follett Birth Year: <1856> Birthplace: NY Age: 24 Occupation: Farmer Marital Status: Single Race: White head of Household: Henrietta Follett Relation: Son Father’s Birthplace: NY Mother’s Birthplace: NY Census Place: Ulysses, Tompkins, NY _______________________
The 1900 Federal Census shows John was an inmate at Willard State Hospital in Romulus Town, Seneca, NY, at age 44. He is also listed as a single man. Williard was an asylum for the chronically insane. This page was transcribed in more easily readable type at this url: http://inmatesofwillard.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/census-1900-men.pdf - Note: A Joseph Follett, age 56 (b. 1844), is also mentioned as an inmate of Willard at this time. (I think Joseph was related and am researching this - I think he was the son of Joseph B. Follett (b. 1820).)
More info and pictures on the Willard facility can be found on this blog: http://thejoyofcaking.wordpress.com/2011/05/17/a-day-at-willard-asylum-for-the-insane/ - or see also this very excellent webpage: http://inmatesofwillard.com/ that relates to the blogger’s book available on Amazon: Linda S. Stuhler, The Inmates of Willard 1870 to 1900: A Genealogy Resource [CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (December 17, 2011)]
Further Notes: Excerpt from Elopements, Suicides and Accidents at the State Hospitals. 1906 - 1907 - “At the Willard State Hospital a patient secreted binding twine about her clothing and seizing a favorable opportunity hanged herself from the door of a room. At the same institution a male patient died from asphyxiation due to the lodgment of meat in the larynx.“ (I am uncertain whether this reference may have referred to John Follett, but it is possible, since he died in 1906 at Willard. ________________________
