Note: N2034 DEATH NOTICES FROM THE CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, NASHVILLE TENNESSEE 1877-1879 MARY CLARK FULGHUM, nee Williamson, born Va., Sept. 20, 1792; moved to Williamson Co., Tenn.; married Theophilus Fulghum,1810; active in old Ebenezer Campground, Nashville Circuit; had 12 children; died Davidson Co., Tenn., Nov. 17, 1878.
Mary (Polly) Clark Williamson was born Sept. 20, 1792, and died Nov. 17, 1878. She married Theophi1us Fulghum in Williamson County on Jan 2, 1810. Theophi1us Fulghum was born Dec. 15, 1781 and died. Jan. 13, 1856. The Fulghum family was in Wayne County, N. C., as early as 1769, at which time John, Michael, and Rayford Fulghum appear on a tax list. Rayford Fulghum, the father of Theophi1us, was born in N. C. in 1743, and in 1764 married Winnifred Pearce (Pierce) (1748-1833), daughter of Arthur Pearce and Mary Everett. Everett Pearce, brother of ~ . Rayford Fulghum, was a member of the N. C. State Legislature from Johnston County. Arthur Pearce, father of ~ Rayford Fulghum, was a soldier in the American Revolution, and is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. Arthur Pearce was born in 1723, and died Oct. 2, 1792.
The Fulghum (Fulgham) family had come to N. C. from Isle of Wight County, Va., where Captain Anthony Fulgham patented 1600 acres on July 12, 1665. The family originated in Derbyshire, England, where the name was spelled "Foljambe." One Hercules Foljambe held land in Derbyshire during the reign of Henry VIII, and was with the forces of the Duke of Cumberland in his attack on Puerto Rico in 1597. Theophilus and Arthur Fulghum sons of Rayford and descendants of Hercules Foliambe, arrived in Williamson County about 1799, and settled on Spencer's Creek. About 1815, Theophilus and Polly Williamson Fulghum moved to what is now Cheatham County, Tennessee. (However, some members of the Fulghum family have always been in Williamson County since its founding.) Their children:
a. Williamson Fulghum was born in 1810, and married Martha Mcquary; d. 1882.
b. Benjamin Fulghum was born in 1814, and married Caroline Ferebee, Aug.26,1840.
c. Martha Fulghum married Philip M. Williams on Dec. 2, 1840.
d. John Graves Fulghum was born Sept. 26, 1823, and died April 21, 1898. He married Margaret Rowzee on Aug. 4, 1852.
e. Nancy Fulghum was born about 1828.
f. Theophilus Pearce Fulghum was born in March of 1831, and died on Aug. 21,1838.
g. Arthur Fulghum was born about 1832.
h. Sally Fulghum was born about 1832.
i. Rayford Fulghum was born in 1817, and died Sept. 11, 1858. He had a store in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
j. James li. Fulghum was born Oct. p, 1821, and died Feb. 18, 1901. He married Eliza ~ Ussery pn Oct. 4, 1857, and her sister, Mary Ussery, on May 24, 1865. Eliza Jane Ussery was born March 27, 1839, and died March 23, 1860; Mary Ussery was born Jan. 9, 1844, and died May 28, 1904. Eliza ~ and Mary were the daughters of Mastin Ussery (1800-1868) and Elizabetp Fowler (a daughter of William Fowler and Deborah Liles, who married in Nashville in October of 1798). Mastin Ussery was a grandson of Thomas Ussery, a soldier of the American Revolution and a member of the N. C. House of Representatives from 1788 to 1795. Mastin's father, Robert Ussery, married Mary Cheairs, member 6f a pioneer Maury County, Tennessee family. Major Nathaniel Cheairs, her cousin, was one of the outstanding citizens of Spring Hill, Tennessee. Mastin Ussery settled on Dog Creek near Kingston Springs, Tennessee, about 1817, and was a County Judge for, his district of Davidson County from 1841 until 1854.
James H. Fulghum and Mary ~ Ussery had the following children: (1) James Thomas Fulghum was born June 28, 1866. (2) Theophilus Fulghum was born April 1, 1868. (3) Sallie Fulghum was born Oct. 17, 1870, and died Aug. 19, 1948. She married Thomas g. Moss on Dec. 23, 1888. (4) Nannie Q. Fulghum was born May 22, 1873, and died July 16, 1899. (5) Willie f. Fulghum was born Jan. 11, 1876, and died March 1, 1897. (6) John Arthur Fulghum was born Sept. 1, 1878. (7) Mattie Fulghum was born Jan. 14, 1881.
Children of James H. Fulghum and Eliza Jane Ussery: (1) Mary Clark Fulghum (twin) was born June 26, 1858, and died Nov. 4, 1892. She married her first cousin, William ~ Fulghum, Aug. 16, 1876. (See family of Thomas Williamson Fulghum which follows.) (2) Elizabeth Brown Fulghum (twin) was born June 26, 1858, and died March 23, 1900. She married Hugh Mays. (3) Eliza Jane Fulghum was born March 12, 1860, and died July 25, 1860.
k. Thomas Williamson Fulghum was born in 1816, and died in 1916, just three months before his 100th birthday. He married Martha Woodward on Dec. 9, 1840. Martha Woodward was the daughter of Benjamin f. Woodward and Harriet Burnett, who married in Davidson County on Aug. 12, 1821. The Woodward and Baxter families were closely allied, and were early settlers at what is called the "Narrows of the Harpeth River." In fact, Edmund Woodward, uncle of Martha Woodward Fulghum, married Nancy Baxter on Feb. 22, 1816. Nancy was a sister of Judge Nathaniel Baxter and an aunt of Jere Baxter, President of the Tennessee Central Railroad. Benjamin!. Woodward, brother of Martha Woodward Fulghum, was a founder of Nashville's Mount Olivet Cemetery. For many years, Benjamin!. Fulghum, Martha's son, was a florist at Mount Olivet. Children of Thomas Williamson Fulghum and Martha Woodward: (1) Richard Fulghum was born in 1841. (2) John Arthur Fulghum was born in 1842, and was a soldier in Company H of the 42nd Confederate Regiment of Tennessee. (3) Harriet K. Fulghum.was born in 1843 and married Nicholas Perkins Sneed (1840-1912) on Jan. 15, 1867. He was the son of James P. Sneed and Judith Herbert. His ancestors, which consisted of the Sneed, Perkins, and Hardeman families, were among the founding families of Williamson County. Children of Nicholas Perkins Sneed and Harriet Fulghum:
(a) Judith Sneed was born May 22, 1870; (b) John Sneed was born Sept. 2, 1871; (c) Pleasant Sneed was born De-;;:-20, 1872, and died July 1, 1873; (d) William Sneed; (e) Harriet Sneed; (f) Martha Elizabeth Sneed was born Feb. 14, 1868. She married James n. Wiles, ~., and had three children: Joseph S n e e d ~ , James Wiles, and Nellie Wiles. The Wiles family had a funeral home in Nashville for many years.
(4) Mary Fulghum was born in 1845.
(5) Sallie Fulghum married Greenwood Payne. J2!:. John Payne of Nashville is their grandson.
(6) Benjamin E. Fulghum was born about 1853 and was for many years florist of Mount Olivet Cemetery. After the death of Benjamin I. Woodward, he was florist of Central State Hospital, also in Nashville. He married ? Binns.
(7) Lena Julghum was born about 1855. She married Lonnie Tidwell.
(8) 'Iheophilus Fulghum was born in 1859. He married Mattie Jbmn Oct. 6, 188!. Tabitha Fulghum died unmarried.
(9) (10) Martha Fulghum. (11) William James Fulghum was born Dec. 15, 1844, and died Nov. 22, 1947,
just before his 103rd birthday. He married his first cousin Mary Clark Fulghum, daughter of James H. Fulghum and Eliza ~ Ussery, on Aug. 16, 1876. (See above for family of James H.Fulghum.) Their children: (a) James Thomas Fulghum was born May 20, 1877, and died Oct. 2, 1942. He married Margaret Mary Carroll (1885-1957) on Sept. 20, 1905. Their Children: James Thomas Fulghum; William P. Fulghum; Mary Fulghum (born June 22, 1906. She married Albert 1. Menefee on Dec. 16, 1926. Their children: Albert who married Valere Potter, da4ghter of Justin Potter; and Margaret Menefee, who married Edward Gillum.) (b) Charles Fulghum was born March 9, 1881, and died unmarried on Sept. 18, 1940. (c) Effie Fulghum was born Dec. 25, 1883, and died June 22, 1946. She married Alfred ~. Argyle on April 8, 1919, and had one daughter, Mary Catharine, who is now ~. James Short of Franklin, Tennessee. Mary Catherine and James Short have two children, James Short and . ~ Short. (d) Maurice Gunn Fulghum was born Dec. 13, 1886, and died Nov. 12, 1950. He married Odel1e Mallory of Franklin, Tennessee, on July 26, 1933. Odelle is the granddaughter of Clement Mallory and Melissa Fleming, both members of pioneer Williamson County families. (e) Robert r. Fulghum was born March 19, 1891 near Kingston Springs, Tennessee, and died on March 15, 1926, while on a business trip in Corsicana, Texas. He married ~ Claire Mahony on April 24, 1913. Ella, the daughter of Thomas Mahony and Ella Dawson, was born in Erin, Tennessee, on April 4, 1893, and died in Nashville on Aptil 20, 1958. Robert and ~ Fulghum had one daughter, Eleanor, who was born in Memphis on Jan. 23, 1915. Eleanor Fulghum married Douglas Crowder of Gallatin, Tennessee, on May 4, 1933. There are two children: Emily Crowder Bunting ~ . William Farnum Bunting), presently a graduate student at the University of Michigan, and R£. Robert Douglas Crowder. the writer of this history and currently Associate Professor of French Literature at North Texas State University.
