Note: er road." Elmer studied medicine with Dr. Daniel Goodyear in Hinesburg and took a full course at Castleton (Vermont) Medical College, receiving his diploma in June, 1835. After a year or two at Havana, New York, he began practice in Shelburne where he served as town clerk for a time. In March, 1840, he came back to his father's farm where he remained until 1860. He then took up residence in the village. "He has not practiced actively for a number of years." He was elected town clerk and town treasurer every year from 1865 to 1880 and served in the State Senate in 1860 and 1861. He married first (in 1836) Ruth Dorwin who died June 9, 1839 and second to Emeline Dudley on June 16, 1842. Emeline was the daughter of Dr. George Dudley, one of the earliest doctors in Hinesburg who came from New Hampshire. George married the daughter of Elijah Peck, one of Hinesburg's first settlers (arrived in 1787 from Litchfield, Conn.)
