Notes
a. Note:   Have seen birth as 3 May 1843 in Jackson Co, TN. Death on tombstone is 5 Mar 1883, but may have been 1884 since last daughter, Arlena, was born 28 Feb 1884. Anna Bertram: [email protected]; 615-765-5357. 1850 Clinton Co, KY census Elijah Brown 11 KY b. 1838-1839 in household of Michael Brown. 1860 Clinton Co, KY census Elijah Brown KY 1870 Wayne Co, KY census Elijah Brown 25 TN b. 1844-1845; page 25/65 Monticello Post office, Slickford District 3 line 40 #181/181; 18 Jun 1870. 1880 Wayne Co, KY census Elijah Brown 35 TN b. 1844-1845; Slick Ford; ED 108 page line 34 #149/151; 9 Jun 1880. Anna Bertram: The 1850 and 1860 Clinton Co., KY Census show him to have been born about 1839, but his grave marker at the Pleasant Hill United Baptist Church Cemetery (Sunnybrook, Wayne Co., KY) tells us he was born in 1843 and died March 5, 1883. Both years recorded on his grave may be wrong as his last child, Arlena, was born Feb. 28, 1884. The "store bought" markers at Pleasant Hill were placed there years later when a traveling tombstone carver stopped a while in the area and did local markers for the folks around Sunnybrook, or so the story goes. Michael had 50 acres of land surveyed in Clinton Co. KY on Aug. 19, 1846. From these records we believe that Elijah was born in Jackson Co., TN, and relocated to Clinton Co., KY with his parents by 1846. Elijah then grew up in Clinton Co., KY, right next to the Wayne Co., KY line and not far from Bertram Hollow at Sunnybrook, Wayne Co., KY. On June 29, 1849, Elijah's father and Jonathan BUTRAM (aka BERTRAM), who later became Elijah's father-in-law, were mentioned together on a land survey for Enoch BROWN in Clinton Co., KY. (Enoch's land adjoined Michael BROWNS' land.)

Anna Bertram: We have found his father, Michael BROWN, on the 1830 Fentress Co., TN census, the 1833 Enumeration of Free Male Inhabitants of Fentress Co., TN; and the 1840 Jackson Co., TN Census. Also, his father had 50 acres of land surveyed in Clinton Co. KY on Aug. 19, 1846. (Enoch's land adjoined Michael BROWNS' land.) Elijah BROWN has been very difficult for us to research for several reasons, including errors on the early census records regarding his place of birth, discrepancies in age, lack of family bible records of his and his parents households, his death at a relatively young age, etc. The Federal Census Records for Clinton Co., KY for 1850 and 1860 show him born in KY, while census of Wayne Co., KY for 1870 and 1880 show him born in TN. The Wayne Co., KY court house records show him born in TN when the birth of his son, George W. Brown, was recorded. The 1850 and 1860 Clinton Co., KY Census show him to have been born about 1839, but his grave marker at the Pleasant Hill United Baptist Church Cemetery (Sunnybrook, Wayne Co., KY) tells us he was born in 1843 and died March 5, 1883.
