He had a common school education, joined the Presbyterian Church at age 20, married Miss Sarah Franklin in 1847, served one term as Justice of the Peace, was trustee for Fentress County for three terms and served one term in the state legislature, he was a strong adherent to Jeffersonian Democracy . He was interred in the family cemetery with ceremonies by the Mason and Farmer Alliances.
