Casey Winningham -- -- My GG grandfather was John "Broke Leg" Conatser 1834-1917. He road with Dave Beaty during the Civil War. My grandfather, Albert Atkinson, was his grandson. My grandfather Albert told me often the story of how his grandfather got his nick name. They were on the retreat from Ferguson's men, when John fell from his horse. This resulted in him breaking his leg. He could not go on and his fellow men could not wait. So they hid him up under a bluff. They could not come back for him for several days. By that time his leg had started to grow back, but crooked. It was to remain so the rest of his life and thus, this is how he got his name.
Note: John Conatser was the son of David and Jenetta (Beaty) Conatser. John married Elizabeth Reag
