Evans, was a lawyer and became a well-known citizen of Fentress County in the early twentieth century.4,5 In contrast, their daughter, Margaret Ann, married Ben Barton, who served in the Confederate Army and was killed on April 23, 1865.6 (This was after Lee�s surrender at Appomattox.) Clearly, these facts are indicative of the bitter, divided loyalties that existed during the Civil War, particularly in the upper South and border states.
